8A--July 23, 1972 Sunday Guett+Mail COMEDIAN GEORGE CARLIN ARRESTEDTM 0 Allegedly Used Profane Language DIRTY Comedian Carlin Arrested For Use of Seven Words MILWAUKEE, Wis.--W--The Milwaukee County district attorney's office refused Saturday to issue disorderly conduct charges against comedian George Carlin. Carlin was arrested Friday night for using allegedly profane language during his act at Sum- merfest. a 10-day show on the city's lakefront. Carlin then was taken to the clerk of courts where a summary charge of disorderly conduct was issued. That city charge will be reviewed by the city attorney's office Monday and a decision made on whether to prosecute, Carlin's a t t o r n e y said. Carlin was arrested by Milwaukee police after his act. During the show Carlin repeated seven words, which he said cannot be used on radio or television. "I've done the same material everywhere, practically," Carlin said, "for all kinds of colleges, Catholic and Baptist and otherwise, where you would expect the most heat, and there's never been any problem. "The idea of the material in question is to liberate people on ironic that I'm In trouble for using words to help people get free of them." Police said they arrested Carlin after getting complaints from parents who had their children in the audience. "It wouldn't have changed anything if I had known there were children in the audience," Carlin said. "Children need to hear those words the most. As yet they don't have the hangups "The idea of the material is to show the seven words you can't say on television," Carlin said. "Out of 400,000 words in the English language, there are seven you couldn't use on the air. And yet, they're merely words. So I used them in explaining that and in making fun of that ironic situation." Carlin was freed on $150 bond after his arrest and again after the summary charge was issued. He was given permission to leave Milwaukee and did so Saturday, his attorney said. The district attorney's office declined to prosecute because they didn't think there was disorderly conduct and because they thought what he said probably was protected under the Soviet Capsule Transmits From Venus for 50 Minutes MOSCOW-UPi-Th* So vie spam prob* Venus 8 parachuted safely onto the planet Venus Saturday, and transmitted information back to earth for 59 minutes before going silent, the news agency Tass reported. The signals a p p a r e n t l y stopped because the capsule was incinerated or crushed by the intense heat and pressure on the planet's surface. "Carried out for the first time were experiments to determine brightness, pressure and tem- erature in the atmosphere and m the surface of the planet on 'ts day side," Tass said. This was the second success- ul Soviet landing on the torrid surface of the bright planet. Venus 7 landed softly on the planet Dec. 15, 1970, and sent radio signals for 23 minutes be- 'ore it was burned up or crushed in the heavy atmosphere. Venus 8 was launched March 27 and by Russian calculations traveled more than 186 million miles before reaching the planet. * * * VENUS 8 is stronger and heavier than some of the earlier models, which burned up in the fiery atmosphere before reaching the planet's surface. The two latest space probes, with heat proof parachutes, have .body shields capable of withstanding 986 degrees Fahrenheit. Venus 7 reported a surface temperature of 919 degrees. Tass said Venus 7 and 8 were ;he same weight, 2,600 pounds, jut with a difference. It was "ound on Venus 7 that the descent module could be made ighter. So Venus 8,-with a lighter descent module, carried a heavier scientific payload that permitted expanding its research, Tass reported. Tass said the Venus 8 probe had obtained data "on the nature of the rocks of the planet's surface layer" and results of the measurement are being processed. The news agency predicted the data transmitted from this planet closest to the earth will be of importance for an understanding of the evaluation of the solar system. OB - Sheriff's deputies finally have established the identity of a young map who's been in Solano County jail since June 3, steadfastly refusing to be fingerprinted. They lifted his prints from his knife and fork. The prints and a computer check revealed the mystery man was Robert William Mayer, 24, of Mayer, Ohio, arrested originally for hitchhiking on Interstate 80, deputies reported Friday. Sheriff Albert Cardoza said authorities are "reasonably well satisfied" Mayer isn't wanted elsewhere but added that he will be held for contempt here until he obeys a judge's order to submit to booking procedures. He also has been charged with obstructing a police officer in the performance of his duty, namely fingerprinting and booking, the sheriff said. Why resist fingerprinting? Cardoza said Mayer told deputies "he wants to start life anew, he wants to forget the past."
