Old West in South Dakota By Henry tad Yen Bradshaw When the Old West Trail cuts through South Dakota, it does so through some of the most scenic, true-West land in America. Near South,Dakota's western border, the trail winds into the unique pine-covered Black Hills with stops at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial, frontier towns. A spur off the main trail circles from Rapid City to Badlands National Monument, a strange land of eroded formations, and crosses the Rosebud and Pine Ridge Indian reservations. Contrasting to the mountainous scenery is the other portion of South Dakota's Old West Trail that streaks for over 300 miles from the state's southeastern corner to bisect its flat prairie heartland. The entire route hugs the Missouri River on which, long ago, explorers Lewis and Clark (daringly paddled their dugouts and opened up the far west. Today, dams built on the "Old Mo" have harnessed its waters and created fabulous reservoirs where excellent fishing and all types of water sports can be enjoyed. (South Dakota has more boats per capita than any other state.) These water activities, along with gdod camping, make this section of the Old West Trail a delightful outdoor adventure. Take a closer look at this extraordinary water-fun trail highlighted by four huge reservoirs, all with boat ramos. and campsites: ( , L l ) : n \ S ' l M O T K I In Delightful Chi.-rry G r o v o 301 N.Ocean'Blvd. NORTH MYRTLE BEACH South Carolina 29582 Phone 803 249-2412 2 4 3 ROOM EFFICIENCIES UAL ESfAn 254425* MB 254-274) Johnnie Mtntr's FtSHIWiFI«ISO«BUSIIESS * FISHING PIER * GIFT SHOP If RESTAURANT * REAL ESTATE OCIAMFW«TAPAimBlTS Wr»9htivW«l«Kh,N.C. Fishing for nothern pike, walleye, sauger is excellent. Fishing is good, too, for prehistoric paddlefish, usually found only in the Missouri river drainage basin and the Yangtze river in China.- To call at these exciting impoundments join the Old West Trail at Yankton. once the Dakota Territorial capital. At Gavin's Point National Fish Hatchery more than 140 native fishes are on display. Move on to Ft. Randall dam at Picks- and history buffs will like exploring the ruins of an 1856 army post. Nearby Lake Andes National Wildlife Refuge harbors great flocks of mallards and geese that use the Missouri flyway in spring and fall. From Plankintpn, the trail detours west 15 miles to Mitchell, home of the world's only Corn Palace. Here, too, is the Museum of Pioneer Life, proud of its original painting of the "Dakota Woman," much beloved by South Dakotans. Back on the principal route, the trail heads north with the Missouri River to Mobridge. In the municipal auditorium, murals depict the region's ancient Indian villages. Sitting Bull is buried on the outskirts. Differing sharply from the Old West Trail along the Missouri River, is South Dakota's western segment. For it leads into the "Magic Mountains of the West," the Black Hills, and is blessed not only with forested mountainous beauty, but also many unusual attractions. From the time the trail enters the state near the cowtown of Belle Fourche, scene of a rousing Fourth of July rodeo, it is evident that this is country in which to linger. There is Spearfish with its under-the- stars Passion Play. And Deadwood, still clinging to memories of its mad gold rush days when Calamity Jane cursed her teams of oxen ' down its Main Street and Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back in a local saloon. The Adams Memorial Museum preserves mementos of those early days, but a livelier flashback is the "Days of '76" celebration the first weekend in August. At Lead, Deadwood's sister city, there are tours to inspect Homestake, the largest producing gold mine in the western hemisphere. Upstaging all attractions hi the Hills are the four giant carved-out- of-granite presidential heads at Mt. Rushmore National Memorial. But' even larger than these, when fin- ished, will be the likeness of the Sioux Chief Crazy Horse being carved out of a mountain near Custer. Tucked into this picturesque country is vast Custer State Park where buffalo roam almost as they did in frontier days. The park has camping, artificial lakes for boating and fishing, hiking trails glimmering with macaschist.a playhouse featuring famous Broadway plays, and loveable panhandling wild burros that stop tourists on their way to driving the pigtail bridges and tunnels of switch backing Iron Mountain Road. So many caves abound in the hills, spelunkers could be kept busy for years. However, Wind Cave National Park has more than an extraordinary cave: within its boundaries are tremendous herds of antelope, deer, buffalo, and a fascinating prairie dog town. Adding an old-time atmosphere to the Hills is the 1880 train that chugs from Hill City to Custer; and Rockerville, a re-created gold rush town, where stagecoaches rumble and gold is panned. Rapid City, the eastern bustling gateway to the Hills, is bordered with attractions, and is a favorite with dog racing fans. From here, _ the Old West Trail offers a side trip to happy Wall Drug crowded with inexpensive souvenirs and Badlands National Monument where nature hikes point up the magnificence of its castellated formations.
