JC -M«v30, 1976 Ciwlefcr. AtC Virjiai* A 9 8 Record Great in Stolen Bases But Not in Wins OAKLAND (AP) - The Oakland A's refuse to believe their early season base- running success can be attributed to the fact the team has been going mostly downhill. "We stole 10 bases in 10 attempts and lost a doubteheader. We stole 15 times in 15 tries in two games at Minnesota and lost both of them. That's a sin," Manager Chuck Tanner exclaimed in frustration at one point. Oakland fielding sins--51 errors in the first 40 games-and weak hitting enabled the A's to lose eight games in a row although the club was stealing bases at a rate no major league baseball team has matched since the turn of the century. With three-quarters of the season left, the team that sacrificed power in trading away Reggie Jackson, had almost 100 stolen bases. The A's had 93 stolen bases in 120 attempts, a 77 per cent success record through games of Tuesday night The modern big league record is 347 steals in 1911 by the New York Giants. The American League record is 289 by the 1913 Washington Senators. Three of the American League's top four base stealers are A's--Bill North. Don Baylor and Bert Campaneris. All Ifce Leafan "We're going to have all the leaders at the ead of the season," predicted North. who ted the American League in steals with 54 two years ago and is confident he can top that figure since Tanner gives the base runners a lot more freedom than former A's manager Alvin Dark did. "We run whenever it's feasible." explained North. "Alvin wanted us to stay at first in some situations so hitters like Reggie would get more fastballs to hit. I'm not trying to criticize him-that's what be be- lieved n-twt I'd rather be hilling with a runner in scoring position." Tanner, citing the early season injury to Geae Tenace and the batting troubles of Sal Bando. Campaneris. Baylor. Billy Williams and Claudell Washington, said. "Once we start hitting like we should, we're going to have a big edge. Every catcher we face will be saying to himself, "The A's are going to be running, so I've got to call for a lot of fastballs."' Tanner expects North, Campaaens and Baylor to steal at least 40 bases apiece, along with Washington who led the team last season with 40 steals Memorial Day OPEN ALL DAY MONDAY, MEMORIAL DAY-1A 5 ML RMtfir tars-IDE., NED. t TMIS.-S ft JM« 5 FJ.
