12B -- MavSO, 1976* Sunday CoMflte-Mail __________ - --------------- Chvlttwo, A«t Virjina ----Otherwise While People Thin Out, Something Is Gaining By Tom Fesperman I've been watching the young, but with eyes that cross. My right sees much to admire, but my left sees a blur of contradictions. The young yearn for a time that's gone. They listen to the music for the ancient lute. They chew on roots and leaves, sans strange colorings and other additives. They spend days spinning yara And making batik, the way it was in 30 A.D. and a molding pottery, 14th century style. They curse the industrial poisons, and the cliff-dwelling overcrowding. If we are to save the earth, they say. there must be a thinning-out. The vital thing, they say. is population control. Yet they limit this preachment to people. . ·· Thev don't say a word about dogs. The'young. I find, love dogs. They all have dogs. Many have six or eight apiece! in all colors, shapes and odd sizes. While they're thinning out the people, they're leaving us up to our blanks in pups and mutts. Everywhere I see the barefooted, sack-covered, sandal-shod young, 1 see dogs. Free. Unwashed. Bleeping on the beach. Politicians are sacred of dogs. A town that sets a limit of 1.9 per cent annual people growth doesn't dare put a restriction on dogs multiplying. This is peculiar, since most dogs aren't even registered to vote. Leash laws are only lip service to the bitten. Dogs commit acts on sidewalks that people would be put uoder the slammer for. ·- And the young, who dream of a cleaner earth, shout: "Attaway to go. Jo« ! " , Young vegetarians let their dogs make hors d'oeuvres of an old man s porkish leg. Yet if I were to crouch and bite a dog's knee, they'd come and carry me out to the farm. My supermarket has maybe two shelves left for people food. The rest is dog'food, complete with starnge colorings and other additives. I admire the young. 1 don't even mind the lute so much. But I wish they'd broaden their thinking on population control.
