"But the hole opened up, and at the eighth pole we were flying. He made the move on his own." Angel Cordero, who rode Cannonade to victory in the Kentucky Derby and finished third in the Preakness, was even more demonstrative than Rivera in the jockeys' process room. Cordero rushed up to Rivera when he entered and yelled congratulatory statements in Spanish to his fellow Puerto Rican. Asked to interpret, Rivera said: "He told me that now I have a big one, too, and that we're tied." "We still got a chance for the Triple Crown for Puerto Rico," Cordero said. "Two down and one to go." Cordero also related the botched hotel situation for Rivera on Friday night. "When he got to the hotel," Cordero said, "they told him Pearson Sets Record To Win M-D 500 Pole DOVER, Del. (AP) - David Pearson, winner of three consecutive 500-mile races here, set a Dover Downs track record of 134.403 miles an hour Saturday to capture the pole position for Sunday's Ma- sonDixon 500 Grand National -stock car race. Pearson pushed his Wood Brothers-prepared 1974 Mercury over the high-banked Dover oval in 26.785 seconds on the first of his two qualifi- ing runs to smash his own track mark. His second lap of the muggy afternoon showed a speed of 134.123 m.p.h., also bettering the old standard of 133.923 which he set last September in qualifiying for the Delaware 500. Starting next to Pearson in the front row in Sunday's National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing will be Richard Petty. They sent him to a different hotel, and he wound up sleeping on a couch in the banquet room." Cordero, who gave a portion of his winner's share of the Derby purse to Rivera, has given important boosts to the riding career of his countryman. After winning with his first two mounts in the United States in 1967, Rivera became homesick and went back home. It was Cordero who coaxed him back a couple of years ago. After Little Current won the Preakness by seven lengths over Neopolitan Way, another longshot, Rivera thanked Cordero for directing him to John Galbreath, owner of the Darby Dan Farm, and the chance to ride Little Current. Rivera rode R u b e The Great to a lOth-place finish in the Derby, but he had first choice on Little Current in the Preakness. Cordero said Cannonade "just couldn't get hold of thei track. I moved him up in the stretch but he didn't run his race." "He's still a good horse to me," Cordero said. "When he gets a track he likes, he'll still be the horse to beat. On a fast t r a c k , my horse will be tough." Jockey Herberto Hinojosa said Neopolitan way "ran a big race" in finishing second. "He had to go around just about e v e r y b o d y . He ran .maybe a sixteenth of a mile more than anyone else in the race." Hinojosa said two horses, one of them All Game, forced his mount to pull up while making a move at about the half-mile pole. Earlier, on the first turn, he was forced wide. "He lost a lot of ground, but the way the winner was mov- 'ing, I guess it didn't make too much difference," Hinojosa said. "After we passed all those horse, I looked up and Little Current was gone." CHARLIE KING MGR. CHAS. OFFICE KING SIZE LOANS UP TO 10,000 JOE LE ROSE MGR. ST.
