ISA -May 30. 1976 Suiufav Co**! e-Jf oil -OwltAo, Suez Canal Slowly Regaining Major Waterway Role ISMAIilA, Egypt (AP) - A year after its reopening, the Suez Canal has yet to regain its old role as a major highway of international trade but the graphs are beginning to point upward. Egyptians regard the canal as \isible evidence that they genuinely seek peace with Israel. The dozens of ships using the 103-mile waterway every day and the rebirth of the cities along its banks make it difficult. Egyptians say, to envisage the whole enterprise being jeopardized in another war. Officials of the Suez Canal Authority report that after an initial period of "experimentation and testing," shippers now are showing more confidence that the canal is safe and likely to stay open. "The monthly increases in traffic are a good sign that the canal is gaining importance as a link between East and West." said the chairman of the authority. Mash- oar Ahmed Mashour. In the first month of renewed operation, an average of 11 ships a day went through the canal. The present average is 46 ships a day, and the canal may increase traffic from two to three convoys a day next month. The canal was closed on June 5.1967. on the first day of the six-day war which brought the Israelis to its eastern bank. President Anwar Sadat reopened it last JuneS. By then the Israelis had pulled back from the canal and under an agreement last September withdrew to the central Sinai Peninsula, out of artillery ranee of the waterway. Americans operate electronic monitoring stations to ensure that neither side launches an attack. As another Egyptian bet on peace, the agreement gave Israel the right to send cargo through the canal on foreign ships for the first time in more than 20 years Canal officials say there has been about one such passage a nwnth since the canal reopened George E.TomaJ.D.
