In most cases, however, the A-frame is still being used as a vacation or second house. That's partly because building codes in certain "permanent home" areas forbid structures unlike those already there. And partly because the A-frame is regarded by many persons as a kind of vacation styling; it gives off the atmosphere of relaxation they seek in a home away from home. * * * WHILE THE so-called prow front on most A-frames is considered desirable because of the expanded vistas it provides to the living areas, the use of glass can sometimes get out of hand. In this A-frame, architect Lester Cohen lias found a good balance for the use of glass and solid wall. He has concentrated wide spans of glazing on one side of the house, with four clerestory arches that provide a tree-top view while maintaining a feeling of privacy within the house. The open space of the living area -- a iwo-story-plus cathedral ceiling over living and dining areas -- takes on a more sophisticated look as a result of the use of conventional walls. The endosement of the kitchen, so it is not seen from living and dining areas, adds grace to the relaxed type of living the plan suggests. · · » OUTSIDE, the A-line of the roof is modified by dormers on either side, and a massive chimney is used by the three fireplaces available in the plan. The use of conventional doors and windows on three of the elevations of the house gives a more traditional look that will blend in with other houses in the neighborhood. The lower level of the house features its own entrance from the outside as well as from the garage. * * · A FAMILY room with an optional shack kitchen offers a large, open area for informal living, with a cozy fireplace and sliding glass doors on both sides of the angles front wall. Outside, the upper wrap-around deck creates a sheltered area. The main level offers entry from the wrap-around wooden deck onto a flagstone area which is continued to make the fireplace hearth. How is this determined? A. - The strap hangers should be installed every 2 or 3 feet or somewhere between. Be sure you use aluminum hangers and not some other kind of metal. Q. -- During a storm, a large tree in our paved backyard was bent slightly, causing the concrete several feet away to crack and break. All the breaks are in a single slab that is rather large and probably much too heavy to lift. What's the best way to remove the slab before I begin work on repaving the area? A. -- Use a mason's chisel and a heavy- duty hammer. Insert the chisel in one of the cracks and pound away until the con- rete comes loose. Do the same thing in other gaps until, instead of having one large slab, you have z lot of smaller pieces that can be lifted and taken away. Should there be a piece left too heavy to lift, break it up with the chisel and hammer.
