Otherwise... Tom Fesperman Old Boy From Hamlet Alarmed at His World By Tom Fesperman Beneath the surface of my silly grin, I am not really facetious. My deep- down being is racked with pain. I ache over how we appear to weak little countries peopled with thin, unschooled peasants. In my dreams I see the edges of rocky cliffs, then realize they are economics graphs zigging downward. I am distressed by the dangers in detente. And so forth. And so on. Yet. I find myself in my corner of the desert, playing footsie with my desk, agog over what Tom Wicker sees. · * * YOU KNOW TOM He's an old boy from Hamlet, a nice little town in North Carolina, and his daddy worked for the railroad, and Tom grew up bright as the headlight down the track. That son of a gun had a brain that wouldn't quit. And a way with words. Back in his thin days he even wrote limp novels with sexy scenes, and all that. Then he set sail in journalism, and you could see his curling smoke a mile off. Winston-Salem. Nashville. Washington. The New durned York Times. He composes a column coated with care and concern. He views the world with quiet alarm, and rarely points with pride. And scoops the you-know out of me. For example: "The approach of the Bicentennial year is causing a good many Americans to search for the 'deeper causes' underlying the recent collapse of American foreign policy and the economic and social disarray at home." Scoop. I had not detected this searching. Still, here I am out among a good many, and they're going to and fro, pausing before turning left, exchanging news of Jackie, winking at caution blinkers, seeking our garage sales. Inspecting eggs to see if they really are AA large. Snarling over dull reruns that keep interrupting those.beautiful Geritol love stories. Turning Ford off, twisting dials in search of early Shirley. * * * · BUT I MISSED all those people old Wicker spotted going around searching for deeper causes. I don't say they're not out here somewhere. But the ones I've seen are swapping antique jokes across Kiwanis tables, fighting creeping condominiums, retrying beans for tomorrow, wondering how Bedford and Dustin will ever crack Watergate, and marveling over the innovation in our beloved postal service. History is made. You can now order postage stamps by mail. The mind sways at the thought. Maybe the day will come when we can mail in for deeper causes. But I don't think they'll sell. \ It's not indifference. It's just that the people I've run into are far more interested in effects than causes. We'll see these effects in the next election, Wicker. The effects will show a lot of our leaders that they can, so, go home again.
