Tape Transcript Instant Bestseller New York Times Service NEW YORK - The private conversations between President Nixon and his aides, as revealed in the Watergate tape transcripts, increased newspaper circulation considerably, and became instant bestsellers for two book companies. "If we had a turnstile in the lobby, it would be going click- ety, clickety, click," is the way Robert L. Hudson, executive editor of the Tampa (Fla.) Times and Tribune, described readers' reaction to the special supplement of the full transcripts the two newspapers sold for 25-cents a copy. The newspapers that chose to run the full transcripts did it in three ways: in daily installments; as special supplements to their regular editions; as extra sections available for a n o m i n a l charge or free of charge. Bantam Books, jointly with The New York Times, put out an 896-page paperback book edition of the tapes. It was an immediate sellout, and the publishing house extended its first printing from 300,000 to 800,000 copies. Dell Publishing, in conjunction with The Washington Post, also rushed into print with a paperback book of the transcripts. It was "selling like hotcakes," said William B. Dickison Jr., editorial director of The Washington Post Writers Group. "We didn't realize the extent to which this book touched some kind of nerve in the American public. . . The tremendous curiosity people have about what goes on in the Oval O f f i c e of the W h i t e House," he said. Many book stores reported that the transcripts were the fastest selling item since the novel "The Exorcist." An expensive, bulky soft- cover copy may be purchased from the government printing office for $12.25. The Bantam- New York Times edition sells for $2.50. The Dell-Washington Post edition sells for $2.45. Brentano's book store also offered an edition. visited Bath in 1748 at Uxe age of 16 and established a summer White House there in 1784. The house was built by James Rumsey, the inventor of the steamboat. Among those owning summer homes at the town were three signers of the Declaration of Independence and three signers of the U.S. Con- stitution. The town was chartered by the Virginia Assembly in October 1776. Its streets at that time included Liberty. Inde* pendence. Union, Congress and Washington.
