ABC's summer replacements not so hot By Jay Fredericks About the only thing I can say in praise of three new summer series^"The Super," "The Corner Bar," and "The: Marty Feldman TV Movies Thursday "The Comic," (1969) *.**%, 9 p.m., 0 'Q with Dick Van Dyke and Michele Lee. Question Box Q--I think Julie Andrews is sensational and I am very happy to see that she is going to have her own TV scries next season. I'd like (o know if she was a big success in her first Broadway musical, which I understand was not "My Fair Lady." I know all about her success in "My Fair Lady," and I would like to know why she didn't star in the movie version of that musical. One more question, is she married to a famous TV director? -- R.M., Findlay, Ohio. A--Julie Andrews made her Broadway debut in the musical spoof, "The Boy Friend," and both she and the show scored with critics and audiences, but not with the same impact that she made in "My Fair Lady" a few years later. Audrey Hepburn won the lead in the film version of "My Fair Lady" because Jack L. Warner, head of Warner Bras, at the time, didn't think Miss Andrews had any box- office appeal. Walt Disney thought otherwise and cast her in "Mary Poppins," which was released the same year as "My Fair Lady" and won as Oscar for Julie. The rest is history. Julie is Mrs. Blake Edwards m private life. Director Edwards started in TV with such shows as "Peter Gunn" and graduated to feature films such as the recent "The Carey Treatment." Comedy Machine''-* that at least they aren't repeats The shows--all on ABC- were made to replace regular programs off for the summer, and, if their ratings were good, perhaps to win a . place on the fall schedule. So far, none olf them show any chance of outlasting the hot months and they will disappear as the leaves start turning. The shows were made on an austerity budget and they show it. "The Super" and "The Corner Bar" both are situation comedies and both are pretty much restricted to one set. "The Super" stars Richard Castallano, a fine actor who can currently be seen in a much better role as fat Clemnza in "The Godfather," who plays the superintendent of a lower middle class apartment house in New York City. Castallano, I presume, is Radio Classics Classical music scheduled to be broadcast over radio stations WTIP and WTIO- FM at 5 p.m. today includes: Beethoven's "Symphony No. 6 in F Major, Op. 68" with Bruno Walter conducting the Columbia Symphony Orchestra; Rossini's "The Thieving Magpie" with Pierino Ganiba conducting the London Symphony Orchestra. "The Music of Walt Disney" will be presented at 10 p.m. and "Li'l A b n e r , " starring Peter Palmer and L e s l i e P a r r i s h will be broadcast at 10:30 p.m. Religious series to begin Monday "Christ for the Lost" will be presented seven days a week beginning July 17 over radio station WVAF. The program originating from Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Teays Valley will be broadcast at 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday and 7:30 p.m., Sunday. SUNDAY SOLO supposed to be a loveable slob, a sort of Sicilian Archie Bunker. He is too good an actor not to develop his role to some extent but the scripts don't give Castallano or any of the other members of the cast much of a chance. "The Corner Bar" stars that old Dead End Kid, Gabriel Dell, who also deserves better things. Dell, who has proved his ability to act in numerous guest star roles on various series, is here given the part of the owner of a New York neighborhood bar. S o m e neighborhood. His steady customers include a drunk, a homosexual, a cab driver, a Jewish waiter, and a black cook. Here, again, the acfor.s manage to rise above their material--although, come to think of it, that's not so tough "The Marty F e l d m a n Comedy Machine" stars the English slapstick comic, Marty Feldman, who is sometimes fairly funny but who is in dreadful need of an editor or director or something. Someone needs to tell Feldman that his skits usually run on far too long, that he would be much funnier if he were much briefer. Some of his stuff also is very British which means it's not completely understandable to an American audience. As I said, though, at least the shows are new, not repeats, and that counts for something. (Speaking of summer replacement shows and English entertainers, what happened this summer to Des O'Conner? O'Conner, a popular English music hall singer and comic, had become almost a hot weather television fixture in this country, appearing for Kraft the last couple of years. Maybe he asked for money this year instead of free cheese.)
