Bicycle Vacations to see America first-hand to bring the depth of personal experience to his American history classes. The Trans-America Bicycle Trail winds more than 4,000 miles from the Oregon's Pacific Coast, through the Rocky Mountains of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, across the Great Plains and the Ozarks, over the Mississippi and Ohio rivers (by ferry), and through the Appalachians to colonial Virginia and historic Williamsburg. The trail is the creation of Bike- centennial '76, a Montana-based, nonprofit organization workine tn Crossing the continent by bicycle is an arduous and an unforgettable experience--but, it's not as formi- I dable as you might, think. I Mike Seaman, a 70-year-old retired outdoor writer and columnist from Harrisburg, Pa., did it in 1975. So did 55-year-old Dick Dougherty and 39-year-old Herni Auch, a writer-photographer team from the Rochester (New York) Timei-l/n- jon. In fact, it's estimated that about 1,000 people cross the U. S. by bicycle every summer, while many more enjoy shorter vacation tours by bicycle. The summer of '76 will be different. This summer, the number will jump dramatically as an anticipated 10,000 U. S. and foreign tourists dust off their 10-speed bikes and set out to explore the longest bikeway in the world: the Trans-American Bicycle Trail. · Most will be traveling short, vacation-length sections of the trail, desiped to give, the more casual bicyclist a leisurely, put-door-oriented tour of places like colonial Virginia, the Appalachians, Oregon's coastal mountains and valleys or Yellowstone arid Grand Teton national parks. But a surprising number will spend 82 days this summer crossing the entire continent for a long, careful look at rural America and a chance to meet its people. Among them will be doctors, engineers, students, and teachers like the Canadian Professor who wants Cultural Feast Canada's National Arts Center in Ottawa will stage three classic operas in July. '."·', A new production of Mozart|s Marriage of Figaro, performed in English, will lead off the month- long musical celebration, opening Saturday night," July 3 for six performances. The opera is a comedy of riotous disguises and connivings. Tchaikovsky's rarely heard Queen of Spade*, will be given in English in five performances, beginning Saturday, July 17. Written near the end of the composer's career, Spades is based on an Alexander Pushkin story of romance, gambling and deep obsession, set in Imperial Russia. Rossini's le Comic Dry (The Count Ory) will open Tuesday, July 27, for three performances, sung in the original French. The sparkling tale of a rake who tries intrigue, disguise, and seduction to win a beautiful countess will be performed July 27, 29,-and 31. Summeratthe ffimstead. Cool streams. Gentle breezes.
