Stars Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis deliver outstanding characterizations of a suspicious black and a prejudiced white--both convicts handcuffed together after their escape from a chain gang. For the time of the film, the tensions that develop during the action are realistic, arid producer-director Stanley Kramer guides the desperate plight of the two with a deft and sensitive hand. And then there's "Sensurround," the process developed especially for this movie, which uses special sound equipment to try to give you the feeling that you're actually involved in the earthquake. Because it works through the ear, it may make some members of the audience feel a little queasy at first, especially during the longest five minute segment. , Other than the earthquake itself, thecelsjiouriain plot line -- just severalsmall stories drawn together byUie disaster. Charlton Heston, for instance, is a former professional football star who's now a construction engineer and he's married to Ava Gardner who's very jealous because she thinks Charlton is carrying on with Genevieve Bujold. George Kennedy is a Los Angeles policeman who's just been suspended from duty for beating up a county cop in a jurisdictional dispute. Richard Roundtree is a motorcycle stunt man hoping to become a new Evel Knievel. Marjoe Gortner is a crazy grocery clerk who turns into Adolf Hitler when he puts on his National Guard uniform. Kip Niven is the young seismologist who predicts the big earthquake and who, naturally, has a lot of trouble convincing people that he might be rignt before everything starts, to fall down. Not much time is spent on these interweaving stories before the action really begins with a couple of small quakes before the Big One actually hits. And, as Tsaid, the demolition is well executed. Skyscrapers collapse, hills flatten out, rifts open up in the earth, houses topple, fires break out and, for the climax, the Hollywood dam breaks and a wall of water sweeps down on devastated city. In addition to the performers already mentioned, there's also Lome Greene, slightly unbelievea- ble as Ava Gardner's father since both are roughly the same age; Barry Sullivan as the head seismologist; Lloyd Nolan as a doctor, Victoria Principal as a sexy lady who is practically raped by Crazy Gortner; Gabriel Dell as Daredevil Roundtree's manager; Scott Hy- lands as a dam keeper; and, in an unbilled cameo, Walter Mattjiau as a drunk who doesn't even notice the earthquake since he's already unsteady. " ' As is the case in all these films, the script takes a firm second place behind the special effects bufthat's all right since it's the effects the audience has paid to see.
