The highest (3.200 feet altitude) incorporated town in the state. Davis was established in IMS and became one the first lumber towns in West Virginia, with the original mill beginning operations in 1886. Additional mills, tanneries, and pulp mills were constructed along the Blackwater River. Hambleton. Named in 1899 and incorporated in 1905. Lumber and leather were prime industries. The lumber was rafted down to Rowlesburg on the Cheat River. Rafting ended in 1889 when the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railroad was constructed. Hendricks. Situated in a narrow valley between Blackwater and Dry Fork rivers. Incorporated in 1894. The"first Tucker County Fair was held in 1914. Boom years were'1890 through 1920 with several schools, banks, railroads, factories, doctors, and a drugstore. Parsons. Incorporated as a town in 1893 and as a city in 1907. and became the county seat in 1893. Ward Parsons was an early settler in 1769. A historical marker notes the battle of Corricks Ford during the Civil War which took place in 1861. Farming, sawmills, and tanneries were main industries. The mighty Cheat River begins here at the confluence of the Shavers Fork and | Black Fork. f ,,· Saint George. Founded in 1776, incorpo- .*"· rated 1880 and became the first county .'.£ seat which was later forcibly moved to V- Parsons in 1893. Several pictures of this : vfi transfer are hanging in the courthouse. The first church was built of logs in 1840 and is still used for worship. Thomas. Founded in 1884 and incorporated as a town in 1892 and as a city in 1925. Thomas was established as a coal town and was once the traditional center for surrounding mines. At one time eighteen different nationalities lived in Thomas. Ghost towns from the past are Douglas, Sissaboo, Coketon, Pierce, Benbush, William, and Leadmine. Fernow Experimental Forest and Otter Creek. Located in the Mooongahela National Forest. The Femow Experimental Forest was established by the U.S. Forest Sen-ice for the collection of data pertain- ing to the growth and management of forests The Otter Creek Wilderness Area covers approximately 18.000 acres of densely wooded and scenic land and contains many well-marked and worthwhile hiking trails.
