ltV-M»y23,1976 SMAV Virginia State's Eastern Backbone Fine for Touring Cass. Provides a nostalgic ride on an authentic old-time logging train. The railroad has two routes: The Whittaker Station and Bald Knob trips. Both trips provide an exalting ride as well as the opportunity to view the countryside's breathtaking scenery at leisure. In addition to the railroad, visitors to Cass should plan to stop at the museum and Country Store, which contains a gift shop and restaurant. Cass operates Memorial Day through Labor Day and on weekends until late October. ». Green Bank. The site of the futuristic National Radio Astronomy Observatory, where scientists "listen" to outer space. Green Bank is a fascinating and educational experience. Several radio-telescopes are demonstrated on the guided tours: the largest of thcM is 3N feet in diameter, or the area of approximately 1% acres. The tours, lasting about one tour, are free, begin with a color film on the solar system, followed by bus tours of the grounds and facilities. The observatory is open daily from mid June through Labor, Day and on weekends until the end of October. * Spruce Knob and Spruce Knob Lake. The highest point in West Virginia, Spruce Knob (4,860 feet), provides a spectacular view. The observation tower allows an unimpeded look at the strange rock outcroppings and windblown red spruce, as well as a panorama of the area that is difficult to match. Spruce Knob Lake is well stocked with large trout and is open for fishing all year. Facilities are available for camping, picnicking, boating, and fishing- » Etam. Located in the Green Valley about 1? miles from Parsons or 4 mUes south of Rowlesburg, the Etam Earth Station is part of COMSAT (Communications Satellite Corporation) and is a major link in commercial communication around the world. The 17-foot diameter antenna is higher that a ten-story building which enables the European and Latin American and other Atlantic Basin areas to receive and dispatch messages. The antenna for this station was constructed in Italy in 1968 and transported to this country by chartered ship to Baltimore, Maryland. With the exception of the "king post" all pieces were loaded onto rail cars and shipped to Parsons. The king post or main support beam was transported via huge flatbed tractors. » Cool Springs. A great spot for a picnic. There are many different things to see including several old train engines and a working waterwheel. There are also interesting craft and curio shops plus a snack bar and picnic tables. » Laneville. Originally the site of a large lumbering operation. Laneville is a town with an unusual reason for being: It was incorporated in 1908 simply to enable its citizens to vote that all the saloons in the area, attracted by the money of the lumbermen, be closed down. » Dolly Sods. The drive to Dolly Sods is a beautiful one thrown almost unbroken forest aloH the steep frontal kaoht of the AUegkewes. Named after the original set- tiers from Germany, the Dthk family, the area is famous for its primitive beauty, with strange rock formations and windblown flora. The drive ascends steep slopes to the lookout point on the crest of the Allegheotes. From this point, one has a sweeping view of wooded peaks, deep ravines and blue-green mountain ranges rolling away to become a muted blue on the horiion. » Smoke Hole Cavern. Named because legend has it that, lacking salt and other preservatives, Indians and early white settlers brought their meats here to be smoked and cured. The cavern boasts many interesting formations, including the longest ribbon stalactite in the world. i uuu nytu uuut ;W»- emfcsr with a gilt shop, snack bar. tat. piccic tables. Movth of Seneca. Located at the confluence of Seneca Creek and the South Branch of the Potomac River, Mouth of Seneca lies in the shadow of Seneca Rock, a mountain (1.000 feet) of gleaming white sandstone. Genetically one of the river knobs but unique for its lack of vegetation. Seneca Rock rises stoically from the growth of scrub oak and laurel at its base. Legend says that Snowbird, daughter of a Seneca chief. grew up in the shadow of the rock and learned to climb it, becoming the only Seneca able to reach the summit. When the time came for her to marry. Snowbird agreed to choose from among her seven suitors the one who could follow ner to the peak. All tried but only one survived. The summit is now reached by footpath. Old Mill.
