Relatively speak ·iif, West Virginia is a small state, but in many respects it is a jewel nestled among some of the oldest mountains in the worid. This special section of the Sunday Gazette-Mail is designed to point out some of the more obvious vacation opportunities that can be enjoyed only minutes or hours from your front door. We are Hdebtod to the Travel DiviiiM of tbe Sate Department of Commerce and the Department of Natural Resources for much of the material used in publubuc this vacation guide. Outdoor Holidays Still Mountaineer Favorite By Skip JohuM West Virginians are often accused of spending their vacations anywhere but in West Virginia, and for many of us this is true. · But a recent statistic compiled by the U.S. Forest Service may indicate that West Virginia as a playground is more popular with West Virginians than we imagined. ; Foresters on the Monongahela National Forest have been keeping track of the number of people who have visited West Virginia's two wilderness areas since they officially became wildernesses in May of 1,975, and the bulk of the visitors are from West Virginia. : Monongahela's figures show that 50 per cent of the visitors to the Dolly Sods and Otter Creek wilderness areas are West By Qosh Virginians. · All this really means, of course, is that West Virginians like the great outdoors as well as the next man, and that we have what it takes to attract th'e outdoor-orient$ vacationer. ·· Primarily, West Virginia has lots of wide open spaces, a mixture of fields and forests and streams to satisfy just about anyone's taste for camping, hiking, hunting and fishing. · If I were planning a 1976 fishing vacation fit West Virginia, my first move would be to obtain a copy of the fishing regulations from the Department of Natural Resources or from license agents such as county clerks. The regulations pamphlet is a wealth of information about fishing opportunities in West Virginia, including favorite fishing streams and suggested float fishing trips. There is also a complete listing of public fishing lakes and ponds, with notations as to whether camping and boating are available, and whether they're stocked with trout or are warmwater impoundments. ' Most people who plan their vacations ar- ound'a stay at one of our impoundments have in mind a large one, such as Sutton Lake, Summersville Lake, Bluestone Lake, Cheat Lake, East Lynn Lake, or Tygart Lake. Corps of Engineers campgrounds are available at most of these lakes and the only thing they lack is an unlimited number of camping spaces. It's chancy getting a spot on weekends, particularly on holidays. Anyone wanting an outdoor vacation of the primitive variety should consider a float fishing trip on either the South Branch, Cacapon or Greenbrier rivers. A number of trips are suggested in the fishing regulations pamphlet. Of course, such a trip will require some planning, particularly as to getting onto and off the river. My personal choice would be to combine a float trip into a vacation package that also includes sightseeing and just plain relaxing. This can be done by picking a state park or forest near a good float fishing stream. The ideal such place is Greenbrier State Forest, which is close to the Greenbrier River and is also close to historic Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs. If camping and/or hiking are what you're after, the places to go are state parks and forests, or the Monongahela National Forest. The parks division of the Department of Natural Resources puts out an excellent booklet describing all the outdoor opportunities available at state parks and forests, and the U.S. Forest Service in Elkins or its district ranger offices have maps that are very helpful to anyone planning a vaction in or around the Monongahela. Don't forget that if you plan to enter either of West Virginia's two wilderness areas - Dolly Sods arid Otter Creek- you must obtain a permit from the Forest Service. This is required only so the foresters can determine how many people are using the areas and what their primary interests are. All West Virginia parks and forests, and of course the national forest, have excellent hiking trails. For backpacking-type camping, the national forest is recommended, particularly the area around Spruce Knob - West Virginia's highest spot. Hunting vacation opportunities in West Virginia are at least as numerous and varied as fishing vacations, and as a general rule state-owned public hunting areas and the national forest are the best bets because they offer unposted land. Needless to say, all the state forests and the national forest are located in good hunting territory. If you like woodcock or grouse hunting in October, you will want to consider a vacation headquartered at a state park, such as Blackwater or Canaan Valley. Deer and turkey hunting are available practically everywhere in West Virginia's mountain counties, although for deer hunters the opportunities don't stop with the mountains. Deer are spread throughout the state. Getting a reservation at a state park or forest is often impossible on short notice, but there are quite a few good motels sprinkled around the prime hunting and fishing areas of the state.
