Tracing his partnership with Underworld techguy Rick Smith back some 18 years, the pair have been through their share of musical rnnsfor mat ions. "That tends to manifest in our music." he jxiints out. "So the sounds just get broader and broader. We're all fans of Kraft werk and we all like dub music reggae nnd stuff like that.

From there it's very "We all love dub (reggae). From a very early nne, I was listening to (Brit radio D.J) John Peel under the bed-sheets late at night. I le'd be playing this bizarre stuff that was so dubbed out. 'WHITE DUB BAND' "When Rick and I had our first band, our thing was to try to amalgamate a very rasta-oriented dub sound with the very white electronic music coming out of Germany We always thought that Kraftwerk were Just a white dub band, really." Thus spawned Underground's trippy technohouse grooves coloured by Hyde's abstract beat poetics. Thus the three-hour live shows and continued inspiration into the later years.

What's it all about for Hyde? "Stuff that makes you move, makes your body groove, stuff that's great for a film in your head. I think that dancing produces a great film in your head anyway." Asked what plastic he'll be packing when he rolls into town this weekend, he had an even more direct response: "House (pronounced 'ha ousse'), house et house, quol." SL Germain performs at the Hang the DJbig bash, Saturday night with Roger Sanchez, wo Victor Calderone (canceled) and with, like, a million other DJs.
