Phone tapped: MacKay But ex-Tory minister denies link to Schreiber was leaked to solicitor-general by RCMP OTTAWA Former Conservative solicitor-general Elmer MacKay says the RCMP is tapping his phone in "an asscovering, face-saving" attempt to link Brian Mulroney to wrongdoing in the Airbus affair.

"I'm not paranoid. I certainly wouldn't bet a lot of money that they're not listening to our conversation. Who the hell cares?" MacKay said last night in a telephone interview from his rural Nova Scotia home. In the same conversation, he called senior Mounties "numskulls" and compared Commissioner Philip Murray to the bumbling movie character Inspector Clouseau. "With the equipment that Bell has now it's very easy for anyone's phone to be tapped, very easy," MacKay said.

"Canadians don't know the extent to which they are under surveillance and their business is public property." MENTIONED BY SCOTT Last week, MacKay, a former Mulroney cabinet minister, saw his name dragged into the imbroglio over Solicitor-General Andy Scott's in infamous airplane conversation. Scott allegedly told a Liberal friend that MacKay "had a business relationship" or was "an agent" of German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber, a key figure in the RCMP probe into alleged corruption surrounding the 1988 sale of Airbus jets to Air Canada. The conversation was overheard by MIKE BLANCHFIELD Ottawa Citizen New Democrat Dick Proctor. Opposition critics, who clamoured all week for Scott's resignation, jumped on the MacKay-Schreiber connection, suggesting that Scott could have only known about it through RCMP wiretaps and that discussing them in public was improper. Ridiculous, MacKay said.

'NEVER BEEN HIS "I know Karlheinz Schreiber. He's a friend of mine," MacKay said. "I've never been his agent. I've never been his employee. And I am working with him on certain objectives we hope to complete in the private sector, but that's no one's business but our own.

I'm not keeping it any secret." MacKay said he's not upset with Scott for discussing him. However, given the "blood sport" of politics, he thinks the solicitor-general showed bad judgment. He likely should not have had such a conversation except with trusted aides. "I think Andy Scott is in serious trouble. I don't take any pleasure in that.

I feel rather sorry for him." MacKay also said he doesn't want his relationship with Schreiber to be spun as "wrong, or clandestine or sinister." The fact that MacKay and Schreiber are good friends has been documented in newspapers, magazines, and at least one book. They worked closely together years ago when Schreiber 1 lobbied Mulroney to award a contract to a German armoured-vehicle manufacturer in MacKay's province of Nova Scotia. The conversation was overheard by in MacKay's province of Nova Scotia..
