Grands Reportages du Point EVERY WEDN A Columns Internet and Good news for the uncabled CKMI has boosted power of its broadcast signal Montreal's not-so-new Global television station has finally become available to everyone in the city CKMI-46 has boosted the power of its broadcast signal from 4,850 watts to 33,000 watts. The increase, approved recently by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, should eliminate signal-reception problems that have plagued the Global station since it signed on in mid-September.

CKMI was readily available to cable subscribers at channel-position 3 on the Videotron grid. But some non-cable subscribers trying to get Global were getting reception that ranged from fair to awfuL This was particularly frustrating for viewers who were fans of popular American prime-time series such as Seinfeld and The X-Files that showed up on the new station because Global holds their national rights. Before Global got its Quebec license, these programs were purchased for local telecast by CFCF-12, a station that is readily available without cable. Some suspected that they had been written off by the new Global station, which had callously calculated that its advertisers weren't interested in reaching people who can't afford cable subscriptions. Not so, Global said. The new station wanted to reach as many Montrealers as possible and, eventually, decided that a power increase was the only way to do it.

"We're still doing some field testing, mil- cor 1 CINEMA IMPERIAL LAST 2 DAYS MIKE BOONE TV RADIO i.Xlir.r 1 is but we're happy with initial results," said Patrick O'Hara, Global director of operations. "The signal has improved by a factor of 10." Global shares a transmitter site on Mount Royal with two other ultra-high frequency TV stations, Television Quatre Saisons flagship CFJP-35 and Tele-Quebec-17. CKMI engineer Mark Cavanagh says that part of the problem is viewers' confusion about UHF television signals. "People think that you can pick up UHF signals using the rabbit-ears antenna of a TV set," Cavanagh said. "That's not the way to do it." The engineer says UHF reception requires an 8-inch loop antenna.

Most new TV sets come supplied with one, and the loop is readily available at electronics stores for about $10. "With our power increase, anyone using the correct antenna should be able to get a perfect signal," Cavanagh said, adding the caveat that viewers living in the vicinity of the mountain may still experience some problems with CKMI-35, as they do with the TQS and Tele-Quebec signals. Cavanagh also suggested that in a pinch, viewers could use an 8-inch loop of coat hanger as a homemade UHF antenna. "That idea takes me back," O'Hara added. "I can remember my father trying to pick up TV signals from Pittsburgh by attaching steel wool to the tips of our rabbit ears." The TV Tom Jones gets everything right, from the major roles to the horses and animated cherubs. It's a must-see. Unfortunately for viewers who don't have Picture-in-Pic-ture TV sets (and pay-TV subscriptions), Tom Jones is in head-to-head competition with another great series.

From the Earth to the Moon is a mammoth 12-hour chronicle of the Apollo space program. Tom Hanks (executive producer, plus director of one episode, writer of another and actor in the series' finale) brings fresh angles to a story that has been partially told in The Right Stuff, Apollo 13 and the miniseries based on James Michener's Space. Hanks didn't skimp. From the Earth to the Moon, produced for HBO and picked up by Canada's pay-TV movie channel, cost $65 million U.S. and features 100 major characters, 400 speaking roles and rooms full of high-tech toys.

So how do you watch both series? You can avoid the schedule conflict by either taping or catching a rerun. The Tom Jones debut is repeated tonight at midnight on Each Sunday episode of From the Earth to the Moon will air again the following Thursday on The Movie Network. JOHN'S, Nfld. Kim Stockwood always hoped her debut album would go places, but even she didn't realize how far. The Newfoundland singer's debut album, Bonavista, is about to take off, literally, as it heads into orbit on the next space-shuttle mission. Canadian astronaut Dave Williams will be taking Bonavista and about 20 other recordings when he blasts off on the space shuttle Columbia on April 16. Stockwood said she was delighted by the news.

"We met on Canada AM about a year ago and we just hit it off. He ended up getting up and singing with me on one of the songs." Stockwood said she was invited to Florida to watch the shuttle launch, but had to decline because she's in the middle of recordings new album. But she will get a keepsake of her album's trip to the stars. "He said he's going to take it up and then he's just going to take some pictures of it for me." she said. "It'll definitely make thescrapbook." CP GENERAL ADMISSION SS 00 MATINEES S4.2S TUESDAY WCONE80AY 14 25 CHILDREN GOLDEN AGEJ4 25 HOMME AU MASQUE OE FER (Gl 122S 3 20 6 4S9S0 A.
