Well, the rumor came true last week WCHS-TV cancelled the CBS evemng news with a Cronkite order to carry re-runs of An old movie begins at 5 and runs until 6:40 m. It is followed by something called Capital News Central, a locally produced 20 minute TOWS-weather-sports Then comes marshal Dillon.

No matter how weH it is done, it is absolutely impossible to cover adequately in 20 minutes national and interoa- tioil news, state news, local news, weather and sports, network news sfeow is vi- SUNDAY SOLO mmmmmmmmmmmmmz tal if a station is going to make any pretense at all to news coverage. It is i then, tot 1 has abandoned that pretense. For several years now, CBS has come in second to NBC in viewership of its evening The margin is has ter all these years, wry-as pa-sonified on Huntley-Bnnk- ley seems to be losing its popular appeal However, it would appear that WCHS prefers not to wait It feels, presumably, that more people will watch an old movie than wiH look at the news. The movie, no doubt, win be to local advertisers, ttius channeling more into the bulging Rollins pocket. And something you can deposit in the bank is more important than public good will.

WCHS already has proved this attitude with its murder of Captain Kangaroo. I understand from callers who have contacted me after they have called WCHS to complain about the demise of the good Captain that the answer at the station generally has been, "So what? Tlie decision's been made We aren't Captain Kangarro same short shift doubtless wfll be given to those of you who caH about the cancellation of Gnonkite. In other words, nothing you or I can do is going to bring back Captain Kangaroo or Walter Cronkite or any otiier show that WCHS feels a kicking off. You can only nurse your grudge and switch channels. 1:30 Make a Deal (c) the World Turns Days of Our Lives (c) ewlywed Game Password I--The 2:30 9:30 QO--Smothres Brothers Q--(Movie)-- 10:00 High (c) Destination Safety Man from Uncle (c) O-TBA flj--F-Troop eather CD-- 3:00 Time for Us O--House Party (c) World 11:30 -You Ano Hospital I--To Tell the TruUr 3:30 OGU!
