Smartest Grouse The smartest grouse in'lhe state is located on the Jim Guthrie place in Jackson County, according to Sam Parrish of South Charleston who hunted Saturday in that area. This grouse came into Outline's back yard about three weeks auo and made its nest against an old split rail log that is leaning against a tree and an out-building.

Guthrie. who lives alone and seems to attract wild birds and animals, first saw the grouse one morning after he heard his dog whining. The dog kept its not to bother the bird. Guthrie placed a piece of tin over the grouse and left her to her 14 eggs. The eggs still hadn't hatched Saturday when Fairish and his son.

Charley, were there to hunt. "Six hunters came in to observe the grouse," Sam reported. It is highly unusual for such a wild bird as a grouse to nest close to human habitation, and even more unusual for one to be nesting so late in the season. Parrish will be going out to Guthrie's place again next weekend to check on this rare occurrence. if Wilderness Fishing for $130 Clarence Moran, executive director of the Charleston Urban Renewal Authority, recently made a six-day boating and fishing trip near Sioux Lookout, Ontario.

Moran and a companion. Joe Cvengros of Chicago, traveled and camped on vast Lake Lac Seul, one of the 10 largest lakes in Canada. "The amazing thing about this trip." Moran said, "is that it cost me only $130, including plane fare from here to Chicago and return." Moran and Cvengros drove the 1.000 miles from Chicago to Sioux Lookout, where they rented a boat and started their 200-mile jaunt on water. "Fishing was good, although we didn't catch any record-breakers." Moran pointed out. "We caught mostly northern pike and pickerel." The country around Sioux Lookout, as in most of Canada, is a vast jumble of lakes, and a fellow could get lost without much trouble.

Fortunately Moran learned map reading in the Air Force and he got along okay. Moran and his companion tested the new freeze-dry foods being produced by Armour and found them very satisfactory--light, tasty and easy to fix. The voyagers saw a moose, not in the trackless wilderness but from their car on the return trip. It was at a "moose crossing" sign, appropriately enough. Local Youth in Safari Business Word is that Charleston native Charles Cabell is conducting the first safari business in Brazil.

His organization is called Brazil Safaris Limited. Young Cabell went to Rio De Janeiro a few years.ago and decided to go into the hunting business. His customers go into the jungle to hunt jaguars, wild buffalo and numerous other vari- eties of game, or to fish the teeming Brazilian Navy Wallops Cornell, 41-0 ANNAPOLIS. Md. Fall Stocking Highly Popular The fall trout stocking has really caught on with the public. It wouldn't be surprising, in a few years, to see more people fishing than hunting on opening day of hunting season. There were numerous fishermen out Saturday. although a majority undoubtedly combined fishing and hunting. The warm weather was more conducive to fishing than hunting anyway.

Among the rivers stocked are tailwaters of Sutton Dam, Summit Lake, Anthony Creek. Cranberry River, South Branch of the Potomac. Seneca Lake, East Fork of Greenbrier. Spruce Knob Lake. Elk River downstream to Webster Springs.

Shavers Fork from Cheat Bridge to SfewafTPark, and "BTackwater River. if Good Tips jor Turkey Hunters The Department of Natural Resources put out some good tips to turkey hunters in its news release last week. I don't know who supplied the information, but 1 suspect it was the handiwork of my fishing companion from Marlinton, Wayne Bailey. If you are the restless type of hunter, always on the move," the release said, "stop every now and then. Turkeys have noisy table manners and can be heard from afar.

You can outflank them," This made me recall the time in Grant County stopped for about 30 minutes on a knoll overlooking an oak cove. At the end of my vigil I took one step downhill and flushed the largest gobbler I've ever seen. He had been perched near the base of a large oak, doing what I've never been able to figure out. since I hadn't seen or heard a thing during the 30 minutes. Anyway, he crashed through the tree limbs with all the daintiness of 'a falling airplane and was out of range before I could recover from my surprise.
