"We always place (the league championship) as one of our primary goals," MHS coach Don Bechard said.

"We did an outstanding job today. We were a little bit flat in the pool play, but we came onto play extremely well at the end. Hopefully we can continue that for the next couple of weekends." For Bechard, next weekend means the Class 6A sub-state at Washburn Rural where the Lady Indians, 34-1 and ranked No. 1 in 6A, are expected to prevail again in hopes of returning to the state championship game where they lost a year ago. "There's no sure thing in any athletic endeavor and volleyball's definitely no exception," Bechard said.

"I like our chances (at sub-state). We have an excellent chance to win it. I feel like we're doing things well right now and I see some areas we can work on this week." En route to the 1-70 title, Manhattan set several school records including most consecutive matches won (21) and most consecutive games won (21). The Lady Indians did not lose a game all day to extend their season game record to 68-5. Senior Susan Bradshaw finished with 41 assists on the day, including 18 in the opening win over Topeka West, to bring her season total to 556 shattering the Manhattan High record which stood at 518.

Bradshaw's senior teammates Jodi Grunewald and Nicole Harris were the beneficiaries of most of Bradshaw's work as the 5-10 front-line duo recorded 43 kills while junior Jami Colley added 22. Harris led the team in blocks with seven in the semifinal and four in the title match. Grunewald added 27 service points to her 24 kills to lead the Lady Indians in both categories. "I'm real happy for our three seniors," said Bechard, in his fifth year coach MHS. "Coaches always hate to compare, but I think as far as our serving game and our net play this is the strongest team we've had.

We're just really well-balanced this year and dangerous in all of our hitting positions." Junior Jennifer Finnegan got Manhattan off to a good start against the Mustangs with six consecutive service points to open the first game and four straight early in the second to put the championship away with three kills in Colley's final six service points to end the 15-1 rout. "We know that this sport is such a momentum-type sport that you've got to be real careful," Bechard said of the team's future. "We found that out the first match of the day when West gave us fits in the second game. We've got to play them one at a time and hopefully we can keep that No. 1 ranking." Championship Manhattan d.
