Genetic tests on the other girl, Callie Marie Johnson, and her mother, Paula Johnson, have indicated they are not related. But some in Rebecca's family had resisted the tests, saying they wanted to hang on to the possibility that the hospital was mistaken and Rebecca was indeed related to them. Rebecca's two sets of grandparents 11 woman bishops CHURCH Continued from Page B1 The compromise solution was greeted with dismay by New York Bishop Catherine Roskam. "It will be a Pyrrhic victory, but you will have a divided Church," she said. African bishops had claimed that adopting liberal resolutions on homosexuality would be the equivalent of "evangelical suicide" for the Church on their continent.

Some bishops had warned that the Anglican Church would "unravel" if it failed to uphold the strict biblical line on homosexuality, likening the debate to the issue of women priests that threatened to tear the Church apart 10 years ago. Now 11 woman bishops, including two Canadians, are attending the 1998 Lambeth conference. Currently, homosexuals are welcomed in the Anglican Church and priesthood as long as they remain celibate. And, according to Hannen, the resolution should not be seen as an Anglican rejection of homosexuals. "At various levels, including Lambeth and our national church, resolutions have been passed that affirm the contributions of gays to the Church, their place within the Church and their civil rights.

In fact, the Anglican Church has extended same-sex spousal benefits to employees of the Church at the national level," Hannen said. "This was not a debate over homosexuality; it was a debate over how the Church deals with it." AP AND CP CONTRIBUTED TO THIS REPORT STEPPINGS, Frederick William (Fred). Hospital officials have already German-Russian composer Associated Press HAMBURG Alfred Schnittke, one of the former Soviet Union's most prolific composers, whose works ranged from symphonies to movie themes, died Monday. He was 63. Schnittke died at Hamburg's University Hospital, where he had been admitted after suffering a stroke, said his wife, Irina. "A genius composer, and the most outstanding of my friends has died," said Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, who conducted and played at the premieres of many of Schnittke's pieces. Russian President Boris Yeltsin sent a telegram Monday to Schnittke's wife in Hamburg saying he shared her family's "huge grief." A creator of "polystylism," or the mixture of musical forms, Schnittke was spurned in his homeland at the beginning of his career, but by the 1980s had won over Soviet cultural authorities.

He will be buried Sept. 10 at Moscow's Novodevichye cemetery a high honour in Russia, the Itar-Tass news agency said. Schnittke was born on Nov. 24, 1934, in Engels, a small town on the Volga River in an area that had been settled by Germans in the 18th century. The son of a German-born Jew of Latvian descent and a German Catholic from the Volga region, he was influenced by both German and Russian cultures.

Returning to the Soviet Union with his parents in 1948, Schnittke enrolled at the Institute of the October Revolution, a music preparatory school in Moscow.
