"There are huge advantages to locating in Montreal," Paquet said. "We want the public and the private sector to work together in order to develop the island." Keynote speakers include Montreal Mayor Pierre Bourque; Serge Menard, Quebec cabinet minister responsible for Montreal; and Patrice Simard, president of the Board of Trade of Metropolitan Montreal. The Avantages Montreal conference is on from untilZp.m. For more information or to register, call 426-2888.

Montreal is a terrific place to work and do business, so stop crying in your beer and get on with it The words are a little strong, but this will be the message behind a one-day conference called Avantages Montreal tomorrow at the Montreal Airport Hilton. Sponsored by businesses in the suburbs, the conference will showcase Montreal's competitive edge, quality of life and business opportunities. "It's not true that things are going badly," said St Laurent Mayor Bernard Paquet "We've got to stop complaining and start talking about all the advantages there are to doing business in Montreal." There will be four workshops concentrating on the benefits of working in Montreal: Assistance to Business, dealing with government aid for business development; The Competitive Edge, outlining Montreal's position in TEDO CHURCH, GAZETTE Straight from th8 hSait Jasmin Domagala (left), Patrick Gillespie and Richard Humes were among 500 pupils at St. John Fisher School in Pointe Claire who skipped and jumped during the annual Jump Rope for Heart event on May 2. "The priority here is teaching, not administration," Laudy said. "We've done well for many years and it's not because our students are smarter it's just because they work harder." Students at Alexander von Humboldt also traditionally perform well on exams, and the principal believes its students benefit from its small size. "We have small classes and give lots of attention to individual students," principal Horst Studte said. "We have more classes in biology, history and chemistry. We start those subjects earlier and continue longer," he said.

"Also, our kids are very interested in going to school because we stress learning on their own." So who's going to argue with from the three schools that performed so well. All three are relatively small schools that stress good teaching and push their students to work hard. "We offer supplementary courses and catch-up courses and intensive courses in the two weeks before an exam," said France Pilon, principal of Ecole Saint-Georges. This is only the second year the school has incorporated Grade 10 and 11 students into its fold, and Pilon said it is very encouraging to the staff to see such good results. "It shows we're going in the right direction." The school's teachers are well-trained by the Baldwin-Cartier School Commission and the small size of the school 690 students means the teachers know the students well and are able to provide moral support, she said.

At College Charlemagne, executive I The Alexander von Humboldt German School is in the unique position of having so overwhelmingly aced last year's provincial exams that it now has virtually no place to go but down. The success rate of the private school's 210 students was 100 per cent. That's not bad for students who don't even follow Quebec's curriculum. Three West Island schools two private and one public ranked among the top six schools in the Montreal area according to their students' success rate and average mark. Alexander von Humboldt, in Baie d'Urfe, was in first place among private schools.

The average mark of its students was 84.5 per cent In fifth place among private schools was College Charlemagne in Pierre-fonds, whose students had a success rate of 99.3 per cent and an average grade of 82 per cent. In the public sector, Ecole Saint-Georges in Senneville was sixth, with a success rate of 91.6 per cent and an average mark of 77.3 per cent. No English schools in the West Island ranked among the top 10. There might be something to learn ON ALL BRANDS! 1 Cleaning 2. Inspecting Oiling 3.
