THE GAZETTE, MONTREAL, SUNDAY, JANUARY 28, 1996 Cheeseburgers prevent cancer, prof says You can't escape Friends Entertainment Tonight covers them the way New York Times used to cover Moscow The clouds part, sunlight pours down, flowers bloom, and a host of angels play triumphant trumpets: Purdue University Professor Martha Belury, who studies food and nutrition, has discovered that a substance found in cheeseburgers inhibits skin To put a contemporary spin on an old adage, you can avoid your relatives, but not Friends. The hit television series is everywhere and its ubiquity is getting a bit scary, not to mention annoying. This week brought two items of fresh evidence: ffm 4 1 cancer in mica Cheeseburgers prevent cancer. I can't wait to hear from the crunchy-granola macrobiotic tofu-eating health freaks about this one. The substance, if you really want to know, is called conjugated dienoic linoleic acid, and of course there Cover story of the Jan.

27 edition of TV Guide is The Real Lisa Kudrow. The magazine probes "the character behind Phoebe on Friends." After the Super Bowl tonight, NBC will telecast a special 60-minute episode of Friends. Guest stars are Julia Roberts, Jean- Iff DOUG CAMILLI MIKE over lunch. While eating, she had an immediate, dramatic allergic reaction to MSG in the restaurant's food. Her story was very tough, questioning his business ethics in some deal or other.

After he read it, Ovitz sent Busch a gift-wrapped jar of MSG, with a one-word note: "Enjoy." The London Daily Mail reports that CBS has offered Sarah Ferguson about $1 million U.S. to be the host of a talk show. The format is open for negotiation -either a weekly show, or maybe six long specials a year, the paper says. She needs the gig: In London she's just been sued over an unpaid debt equal to almost $200,000, the London Sun reports. Worse, this involves a loan from a (former) friend, Indian-born society hostess Lily Rathan Mahtani.

The Sun says Fergie's pals fear that this suit could lead to others, now that the last reticence about pursuing a quasi-royal over a debt has evaporated. The Sun said Mahtani made the loan in August 1994, so the "duchess" could have six weeks in the south of France with her daughters, Princess Beatrice, 7, and Princess Eugenie, 5. Fergie is 36. I'm still predicting that she'll get a formal divorce from Prince Andrew and marry some wrinkled rich guy from overseas. Overheard in a Bishop St.

bar: not so sure this Stephane Dion guy is going to solve the problem. Maybe if they'd appointed Celine Dion GAZETTE FILE PHOTO BOONE will have to be 145 years of tests yet, but I think I know what I'll have for lunch. Courteney Cox and Matt LeBlanc: they're everywhere. TV RADIO ships, or How I Learned to Stop Worry- Beatty will have to achieve a meeting of minds. ing and Love Friends.

Should be interesting. Claude Van Damme, Brooke Shields, Chris Isaak, Dan Castellaneta (of The Simpsons), Fred Willard and Marcel the Monkey. If you can't wait until after the football game, CFCF-12 will telecast the Friends special at 8 p.m. The complex plot revolves around a New York movie shoot, where Susie the makeup artist Oh, shut up: Somebody asked Lauren Hutton, age 52, how come she looks so young: "All I can say is that I drink large quantities of water, I use a lot of hy-drating creams, and I make love once a day with an Italian." CIQC shakes up its weekday schedule tomorrow. Tommy Schnurmacher, who writes the society column for The Gazette and is host of a phone-in on the AM radio station, will be on the air from 10 a.m.

to 1 p.m. an increase of an hour over his current noon-to-2 shift Steve Michaels is gone from CIQC, as is Gordon Courtenay, whose afternoon music program will be replaced by a 1-to-4 talk program (a combination of lifestyles and Ask the Expert features) with Chuck Phillips. The luckiest fly in Ottawa will be the one on the wall when CBC president Perrin Beatty sits down for a little heart-to-heart with Sheila Copps, who has been shuffled into the heritage ministry, purview (Roberts) is casting a spell on Chandler (Matthew Perry). Ottawa-raised Perry has been on the cover of Maclean's. He and his Friends colleagues have shown up, in various combinations, on the covers of all the hot mags: People, Entertainment Weekly, iJLmnLJ.

Quote of the day: Radio host Garrison Keillor explains about dying: 'They say such nice things about people at their funerals that it makes me sad to realize that I'm going to miss mine by just a few days." What a nice guy Michael Ovitz is! The Most Important Agent in the History of Show Business until he became president of Disney last year, Ovitz has always been known for playing hardball, but an anecdote in the new Columbia Journalism Review really oumstheguyup: A while ago Anita Busch, a reporter for Daily Variety, interviewed Ovitz Brezhnev More interesting than Schwimmer Oh, shut up: This wretched Madonna person, trying hard to win over the Argentine public to the idea that she can play the beloved Eva (Evita) Peron, said this in some Buenos Aires magazine: "Many people see Eva Peron as either a saint or the incarnation of Satan. That means I definitely can identify with her." How do you counter-program the Super Bowl? Most networks run for cover tonight. But the CBC and WCFE-57 offer interesting alternative viewing. Life With Billy, an excellent made-for-TV movie, will be rerun by the CBC. Based on the true story of Jane Stafford, a Nova Scotia woman driven to murder her diabolically abusive husband, Life With Billy won three Gemini Awards Best Actor (Stephen McHattie, who is just amazing as Billy, pumping out more testosterone-fueled rage than you'll see in the football game), Best Actress (Nancy Beatty, who delivered a beautifully understated and natural performance as Jane) and Best Director (Paul Donovan, who did the movie for Halifax-based Salter Street Films).

WCFE has scheduled a Great Performances double feature, the latter half of which is Miles Davis: A Tribute. Introduced by Quincy Jones, the rerun includes an interview with the great trumpeter and clips from Davis's last performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Tonight at 9, Life With Billy is on CBMT-6, and WCFE-57 airs Miles Davis: A Tribute. umu OK, let's try this one more time. Notman's World, a superb documentary about legendary Montreal photographer William Notman, will be on the CBC this afternoon.

Readers might have noted my laudatory review of Notman's World a week ago. They might have heeded my advice not to miss the telecast that afternoon. Notman's World was not on the CBC last Sunday. But the National Film Board office in Montreal solemnly assured me that today's schedule is carved in stone. Apologies to anyone who tuned in or set the VCR last week.

Notman's World definitely airs this afternoon at 2 on CBMT-6. of which includes broadcasting. Beatty was minister of communications in the Tory cabinet when Copps was one of the more stridently vocal members of the Liberal opposition. Now she's his boss. After replacing the befuddled Michel Dupuy, Road Warrior Mel Gibson follows Chuck and Di doubleheader on Copps To meet with CBC president Beatty Rolling Stone etal.

David Schwimmer, who plays Ross, was host of a gala at the 1995 Just for Laughs festival, subbing for Michael Richards. Members of the cast are regulars on the late-night talk-show circuit, and Entertainment Tonight covers Friends the way the New York Times used to cover Moscow. Weren't the preoccupations of journalism a lot more provocative in the good old days of the Cold War? That 's when the newsstand offered a rogues' gallery of dastardly commie rats. Nikita Khrushchev, Fidel Castro, Mao Tse-tung, Ho Chi Minh: these were the guys who popped up weekly on the covers of influential and widely read newsmagazines. Heck, even Leonid Brezhnev was more interesting than David Schwimmer.

The collapse of communism did not open the way for the ascendancy of Friends. But the media obsession with a situation comedy even one as witty and popular as Friends makes one wish that World War III were still a possibility Insomnia was somehow healthier when people were up nights worrying about the threat of nuclear annihilation, rather than the possibility that Ross will sleep with Rachel. Peter Sellers is lucky. If he were alive, he's be cast in Dr. Odd Relation- Passionate Eye (News-world at 8): Divided Memories.

Life with Billy (Channel 6 at 9): Great Canadian TV Gazette television columnist Mike Boone picks the best of tonight 's programs: Super Bowl XXX one. World of Disney (CBMT-6 at 6): Home Copps will be looking for ways to revitalize the culture ministry She got off to a good start, on the day of the cabinet shuffle, by announcing that Radio Canada International would be dodging yet another cost-cutting bullet Copps will barely have time to settle into her new office before she has to grapple with the long-awaited mandate review committee report on the future of the CBC, National Film Board and Telefilm. The heart of the report will be its ideas on public broadcasting. Reinventing the CBC is an issue Copps can sink her teeth into. For meaningful reform to occur, she and movie.

Masterpiece Theatre (Channel 33 at 9): The Countess Alice. Great Performances (Channel 57 at 9): Miles Davis: A Tribute. The Road Warrior at 10): Mel Gibson stars in Australian action flick. Friendly Fire (Channel 57 at 11): Carol Burnett, Ned Beatty play bereaved parents in excellent TV movie. Country Beat (Channel 6 at Bluegrass special includes tribute to Bill Monroe.
