21, 2004 The Atlanta Journal-Constitution EDUCATION NOTES 33 are semifinalists for national scholarship By JEN SANSBURY About 30 percent of the black high school seniors in Georgia recently named semifinalists for the National Achievement Scholarship Program attend a DeKalb County school. Out of 111 Georgia semifinalists, 33 are in DeKalb schools 28 in the public school system and five in private schools. Two of the top three schools are in DeKalb: Chamblee Charter High alone has 15 semifinalists, and Southwest DeKalb High has five. Both schools have magnet programs for high-achieving students. Across the country, about 1,600 students are competing for about 800 scholarship awards worth $2.7 million.

The program has been administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. since 1964 to recognize outstanding black students. Students qualify based on their junior-year scores on the PSAT. The awards are funded by corporations, professional associations and the privately financed National Merit Scholarship Corp. The field will be narrowed to about 1,300 finalists, and then scholarship winners will be announced in March.

in Atlanta. Tickets are $12 in advance at participating schools or $15 at the gate. The DeKalb school board recently approved a proposal from Drumline Productions to promote the event, which calls for local school bands to earn $5 for each advance ticket sold. Don Roberts, the coordinator for instrumental music, said bands have never received more than $3 per ticket in the 10-year history of the event. Proceeds will help the bands and its booster organizations buy band instruments, supplies and equipment and the Morris Brown College Marching Wolverines.

Schools participating are Cedar Grove, Clarkston, Columbia, Creekside, Forest Park, Lithonia, McNair, Meadowcreek, King, Morrow, Pebblebrook, Redan, Riverdale, Southwest DeKalb, Stephenson, Stone Mountain, Towers and Westlake. The event also will feature performances by the South Carolina State Marching 101 and the Marching Wolverines.
