He attended the University of Chicago; Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley. Paul Duke was an aide to Senator Herman Talmadge serving in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. He lead an adventurous youth achieving the distinction of Eagle Scout and living as a volunteer in service on a Kibbutz in Israel in the early 70's.

He trekked throughout Central Asia before returning from Kabul Afghanistan to study at the Institute in Switzerland. In 1978 Mr. Duke returned permanently to Georgia where he was involved in real estate investments and retail tool sales. He owned a retail store in Gainesville and horse farm in Pickens County which he operated until his health failed. The funeral service will be graveside Wednesday, May 28 at 3:00 p.m.

Joan was born Gwendolyn Joan Orner on June 3, 1914 in Garden City, Kansas, the youngest of nine sisters. As a young woman, she was a professional dancer, performing with the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall in New York City; with Josephine Baker and Maurice Chevalier at the Follies-Bergere Theater in Paris; and with a cabaret show entertaining British Troops in Alexandria Egypt, during the early years of World War II. Later, she worked in motion picture production and then as an Administrative Assistant with CONOCO and DuPont. Following her retirement in 1984, Mrs. Donovan moved to Marietta, Georgia where she was active in volunteer work as a for the Zoo Atlanta.

She also traveled extensively, visiting Ireland, India, Africa and Australia. Her husband of 29 years, Frank Donovan, died in 1975. Brown was a proud native of Atlanta, a graduate of Brown High School, Georgia State University and had recently earned her Masters of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. She was a mother, a teacher, an accomplished storyteller and a writer. She taught Sunday school, was a Stephen Minister and a Stephen Ministery leader. As her children neared adulthood, she was called to minister to the aged, the ill and especially the terminally ill. She had enrolled at Candler to become a hospital chaplain but later felt called and hoped to become an Episcopal Priest.

She loved to occasionally preach at her church home, The Episcopal Church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Marietta. Though her stories were different, her message was always the same: regardless of who you are, what you have done, whether you believe you deserve it or not, always remember that God loves you absolutely and completely, no matter what! It is this faith that presently sustains her family. She had many miracles in her life including discovering her half sister in France.

Though they were 47 and 50 when they met, amazingly they looked alike, acted alike and shared many of the same values and beliefs. Within minutes of meeting they became nearly inseparable, as though they were raised side by side. Her greatest joy came from her family. Though she considered her church friends, school friends, the women of the Roswell Club and her many neighbors to be part of her family, her immediate family was her daughter, Kelly Brown Owen, and her husband James P. Owen III of Roswell and recently of Fairhope, Alabama, their sons James, Jack and John, her daughter, Megan Brown Fason and her husband Christofer Fason of Roswell, their daughters Maggie and Mary Beth; her daughter Katherine Brown who is attending Auburn University and her daughter Joanna Brown who is attending the College of Charleston; her sister and brother in-law, Jill and Gary Davis and their children Lauri and Ryan Davis of Roswell; her sister in-law, Jodee Nagle of Rex, Georgia and mother, Florida Brown of Rex; her sister, Sabine of Paris, France and her children Sophie, Sylvester andChlotilde, and her best friend, childhood sweetheart and husband of 33 years, Jack Brown of Roswell.
