It pays in every and financially. It helps to make bigger and better farmers. It puts more enthusiasm and real life on the farm. It is a blessing to the town in which it is held, the county whose name it bears and the farmers who patronize it and lend to it their support.

PREPAREDNESS. Corsicana has long known the bad effects of permitting mosquitoes to flourish within its confines. They have made many sleepless nights and have brought many cases of sickness that otherwise the unforunate victims would have escaped. This year more of that kind of mosquitoes which carry poison germs with them and leave sickness wherever they sting, have come to us. Their coming is attributed to the Gulf storm of last August.

The result is that we have had more chills and fever or malaria than for many years past. We need now to begin a state of preparedness that will prevent a recurrence of this disease next summer. A few days ago the Evening Journal called attention to this matter. The Journal spoke before "the late frost and freeze the days were warm and many of its people poisoned with malaria spread by mosquitoes were shaking with chills or burning with fever just as was being done in Corsicana. Of the conditions at that particular time and how to prevent them, the journal said: big, black, bold, brutal and belligerent, have made night life miserable for Dallas citizens during the past week.

There is fever in not a few homes, too; due in all likelihood to the operations of the pests. frost may obviate necessity of preventative and protective effort. It is doubtful, in fact, if eleventh-hour effort would accomplish anything. It seldom, does. What should have been done months ago was not undertaken.

And the lesson of preparedness has been newly driven home by thousands of vindictive needles. people were urged to further a campaign to locate and obliterate the breeding places of the mosquito. The city appointed a mosquito inspector. The newspapers carried columns of advice including methods of eradication which test has shown to be effective. to be done? Inspection of premises to do away all possible breeding places might prevent recruiting of toe hostile armies.

And the city authorities would do well to determine that all park lakes are thoroughly oiled. This should be done now; for mosquitoes in such numbers constitute a menace which no wise man would dare to face twice. next year? have less talk and more The Journal states the case as though it had been speaking of Corsicana. The killing frost has come and with it and will come again next year if we sit still and do nothing to prevent it. During the winter we should lay plans to be put into effect next spring that will mean that no more black, bold, brutal and mosquitoes will put in their appearance.

It is a serious matter. It is time when we should prepare for the enemy who is sure to return if no precautionary methods are employed. For next year have less talk and more Every really loyal citizen of Corsicana ought to and will get hold of the idea suggested by Mr. Sizemore at the Business League meeting Tuesday night. That idea is a combination theatre and auditorium and it is a splendid idea.

Corsicana needs both and needs them badly. No town is thoroughly up-to-date that is without an opera pleasure and mark of enterprise that Corsicana enjoyed until there came a fire that swept it away. We have long needed an auditorium and the idea of combining the two is a most happy one. WThat should be done now is for all of Corsicana to join hands with the full determination of adding that enterprise to long and creditable list of enterprises. President Taft has given his views on the question of and it is found that, as he says, he occupies a middle ground between Mr.

Roosevelt and Mr. Bryan. The former would build a tremendous navy and the latter would make junk of what we have. From the time the in Europe Mr. Taft has, when heard from at all, been on the loyal and patriotic side, and in each instance in which he has spoken he has urged loyalty to the President.

Therefore his views on preparedness are worth while. He has secured twp notable extremes between whom to select a middle ground, and his position is safe and sound. The Sun believes that there is where President Wilson stands and where he will be found when all of his views and desires have been made public and are thoroughly understood. We want to be a navyless nation, nor is it necessary to spend money uselessly in building unnecessary numbers of monster battleships. Let us remain in a position as respects our army and navy which when we are frowned at we may smile back but not in fear and trembling.

In other words it is well enough to have a stick close by but it would be folly for one to buy an entire forest of big sticks when they are likely to go into decay before they are needed. The pecan crop so good this year as last. It wasn't needed so much. Last year we had little but cotton and there was practically no market for it. Pecans were plentiful and a good price was paid for them.

The re suit was that they were more carefully gathered than ever before and several carloads of these nuts were shipped out of Corsicana. This put no little money in circulation and was a greater help than the unobservant would surmise. This year we have gardens and corn and potatoes and chickens and eggs and pigs and fact so many good things that we have scarcely missed the crop that gave so much relief to so many worthy citizens twelve months ago. The annual report showing the financial condition of the county and what disposition has been made of the money as published in these columns is complete in every detail. It shows that every dollar of the money spent has been honestly spent and that the commissioners as a whole are serving the people faithfully and well.

The excellent and accurate manner in which the statement was gotten up gives unmistakable evidence of the fact that Auditor H. D. Johnson is competent, energetic and is giving the county most excellent service. IN JAIL ON MURDER CHARGE From Daily District Court. After J.

Why should Corsicana not put itself in a position to entertain large delegations? Why should it longer force its theatre-goers to go away from home that they may enjoy a good play? No good reason can be given for the fact that we have no auditorium and no opera house. Now that the matter has been presented of supplying these two needs they matter should not be permitted to rest until success has come. old Liberty Bell, went up from hundreds of youthful lips last night as the special train bearing the Bell left ttfie station. In the farewell words there was a tinge of regret at parting and at the same time there was a stronger suggestion of pleasure at having enjoyed the privilege of viewing this historic relic which holds so conspicuous a place in the history of this government. You will find that a copy of the Sun containing the names of the delegates and the homes in which they will be entertained will be interesting even in the future as it is now.

Keep it for reference during the conference and then file it away. You will enjoy it even many days dience. And it likely that any of us will attend another conference in Corsicana. An abundant sweet potato crop has come to reduce the cost of living. In fact there was so much diversification in Navarro county this year with such great success that farmers feel so confident that they have solved the problem of complete independence that they are experiencing perfect ease of mind, having already planned for more diversification next year.

Liberty county held a fair last week. Many other counties have held fairs this season. But Liberty county promoted a new feature entirely worth whlJe. The last day of tho fair was given over roads. Result: A Predicting a big and good Thanksgiving the Terrell Transcript gives this menu: pecans are dropping in the field; the pumpkins slowly getting all those qualities that make pumpkin pies fit for the gods; turkeys are being fattened by the most improved process.

In short, indications are good for a Thanksgiving that will be all one could The Rest preaching and dinner on the was post poned from last Sunday to next Sun day. It is too sensible a proposition to let pass without making it materialize. Liberty Bell Day was a big one in Corsicana and a day, too, that will linger long and pleasantly in the mind of both men, women and children. Count the list as published in the Sun and have a good idea of the number of delegates who will attend the Methodist Conference. There ought to be a rule that would require the autoist who runs over a chicken to dispose of it instead of leaving it in the street. Texas is so fine that when comes, like good people, it stays, and when it goes it goes to come again.

The sweet potato crop is said to be as fine as any one could wish. Here is another blow at the high cost of living. Orville Bass and Miss Noma Hargrave. Automobile Registration. Z.
