Want a hint? Think Rubber Duckie. Yes, it's Bert and Ernie, the super hip duo from Sesame Street. And they're not the only DAVE SIDAWAY, GAZETTE mer in a single word. And as many of you know, it ain't pretty, nor is it a lot of fun.

How did I get here? The story begins with a CEGEP student in the midst of a busy first year. Summer's the last thing on her mind as she muddles her way through school and other activities. Thoughts of summer fade into oblivion. (Mistake No. I .) While writing biology exams and essays galore, counsellor application deadlines pass by unnoticed.

It is mid-May when this student, finally with some free time on her hands, realizes that it is now too late to apply even for a camp But, being the ever optimistic, idealistic and determined youth of our day, she's certain that there are a million jobs out there and that all she has to do is; choose. She takes her time, catches up on her soaps, relaxes after all, isn't that what summer is for? Mistake No. 2.) By now, many university students have applied for summer jobs and are employed. By the time this student starts cruising the mall for those help-wanted signs, managers tell her the positions have been filled. She fills out many, many applications anyway, confident that someone will call back.

Meanwhile, she starts reading the classified section in the paper and feeling very adult. Visions of dollar signs and nice, professional offices dance in her head. The ads seem too good to be true. And soon she realizes they are. She calls, applies, goes for interviews, gets selected and for what? Selling $2,000 pens over the phone, selling hockey tickets door-to-door on the South Shore, or better yet, selling $100 vitamins to people who don't need any? Reality sinks in.

None of the stores she has applied to called back, so she tries; something she heard of once: a youth' employment centre. Bewildered by the job offers and the number of people just like her, she writes down numbers and soon start looking up. She sends out CVs and" calls and writes on end (Mistake No. 3), and finally finds a job. Weeks later, after she's finished her job teaching kids Eng-lish, our student is unemployed again.

And exhausted. Not so much by the job she had, but by the whole job search. It occurs to her now that being unemployed is a full-time occupation itself. She has gained a lot of valuable experience. And wisdom, too.

She has learned a lot about summer, being young and the pressures of the real world. She knows now how it feels, to be unemployed, and is grateful to be returning to school in September. She has had her glimpse of the real world, working people and job pressures. Most important, she's realized it's summer. We've forgotten what it's like to take a break, go on vacation, go to the beach.

Or if we do take ime to have fun, we feel guilty, thinking that we should: be making money or doing something worthwhile: saving the world, making a difference, challenging ourselves. We've forgotten that not only do we leam during the school year, we learn to make a difference later on. So why do we feel so guilty about taking a break? I after running yourself ragged you still can't find a job. then the only thing to do if you can afford to is call it quits. Nobody might be willing to pay you to work, but countless groups need volunteers.

Try it. Not only will you gain valuable experience, you'll meet and help real people and make a difference doing something you like to do. Come September, we'll face that seasonal question: so, what did you do this summer? Maybe you didn't save a village of people in Central Africa, maybe you weren't the ideal junior executive, and maybe you didn't learn to make the perfect Big Mac. But maybe you learned, something about the real world, the pressures of finding a job and the value of an education. ones: Curious George, the Cat in the Hat and Barbie are all a part of the comeback.

With today's retro fashion trend, style is going back to a simpler time childhood. Looking like a kid is cool knee high socks, baby tees and fluffy animal backpacks are everywhere. Baby pink and blue have replaced more muted colors like beige and black. Even baby rattles are hung from jean pockets on a night out. It's all part of the little-girl look that's so popular right now.

The question is: why? Some people think it might be a matter of clinging to a lost innocence and the safety year ago, if my friends came over, I'd hide my stuffed animals under my bed but now I just don't care," she said. Broxup shops in baby departments (where saleswomen inno- cently inquire who she's buying -for) or at stores like Unity or Juan gives her a second childhood to appreciate, since the first one went by so quickly. For her and her friends, however, the cuter the better. At a recent rave, when a girl walked in with a Curious George strapped to her back, everyone thought she looked adorable. Some guys, too, dress in Bert and Emie gear from the duo's '70s heyday: wide corduroy pants and bright striped tops.

Kenny Ballas, manager of Unity clothing store on St. Laurent said "basically anything cutesy sells." But he sees this more as a passing fad. "Everything's been done, like leather and denim. This was the next thing to come along." Ballas sells the knee socks and tiny clothing, but predicts it could end at any time. "Why should it end?" Broxup asked.

She figures she'll probably stop going to raves and wearing the fashion at 21 or 22, but thinks it will carry on without her which means she's getting old and that scares her to death. coordinator for the fashion show Perfecto at MusiquePlus, describes the style as "young, funny and fresh" and admits to wearing overalls and baby T-shirts.
