"We want them to get comfortable and show us their skills. "Even if we don't instruct much during the first month we do a lot of watching. We get ready for when we start to instruct. With Barrett, we've started working a little on defence.

And he's been talked to about hitting." Barrett agreed that hitting instructions so far have had little to do with the mechanics of his swing. "They've pretty much left me alone so far as that is concerned," Barrett said. "What they have done is tell me to be more aggressive at the plate. "In high school, you see more good pitches to hit, more fastballs. But they told me I can't be as selective in pro ball.

They told me not to wait for the perfect pitch." Around the leagues Ottawa Lynx (Triple-A International League) 55-52 (2nd place): Left-hander Bryan Eversgerd (6-0) had a string of 18 scoreless innings through Monday night. Opponents are hitting .239 against Eversgerd, one of two pitchers acquired from the Cardinals in exchange for Ken Hill. Harrisburg Senators (Double-A Eastern League) 46-63 (6th place): Jose Vidro. 20-year-old Puerto Rican infield prospect, broke his thumb while diving for a ball at third base last weekend. Surgery will finish his season.

West Palm Expos (Class-A Florida State League) 19-15 (2nd hall): After a season with Vermont in the New YorkPenn league, left-fielder Jon Saffer is hitting 329 through 83 games (289 at Albany Polecats (Class-A South Atlantic League) 21-17 (2nd in second halt): Expos' first draft pick last year, shortstop Hiram Bocachica is hitting .306. There is a problem though. He has 42 errors in 68 games. Vermont Expos (Summer-A New YorkPenn League) 26-19: Have won six straight. With Lou Frazier traded to Texas, centre-fielder Ed Bady is the fastest man in the organization.

He's hitting .347. Gull Coast Expos (Florida Rookie League) 14-22: Outfielder Torrence Davis is hitting .330. "We look at him as a power, mid-dle-of-the-lineup hitter," Expos GM Kevin Malone said at the time. "We'll probably shift him to third base.

He has a chance to be a Gold Glove defence at third." Barrett hasn't been moved yet. "There Pie things to work on defensively," Dorante said. "His first steps forward are awkward. On little choppers, his first steps are not with confidence. Then he tends to overthrow.

"But we have been filming him. We have videos of him making certain plays. We have films of him turning the double play. "We will use the film to work with him for the rest of this season and at Instructional League. He'll be better prepared for next season." This doesn't sound as though a switch to third is imminent.

"They've discussed it with me," Barrett said. "They think I can improve at shortstop and that's what we're going to work on. The way they explained it was that it will be a lot easier for me to switch from shortstop to third in a few years than it would be to switch to shortstop from third. "I'm still a shortstop in the plans. I just have to find my power." Players at this level are normally left alone for the first month or so.

Los Angeles 9, Colorado 6 Houston 8, St. Louis 6 California 7, Seattle 2 Chicago 4, Kansas City 3 "he don have no problem. "He goes the other way pretty easy. We bat him third every day and there's never a problem." That's easy for the boss to say. But the 18-year-old right-handed" hitter, who had 10 home runs while batting .638 with 55 RBIs in 105 at-bats Pace Academy this year, feels he has a flaw.

Barrett is hitting ,31 1 in the rookie league. He has nine doubles, one triple and no homers. Hitting to all fields "I'm happy the way they have me hitting to all fields," Barrett said after Monday's game at Municipal Stadium in West Palm Beach. "Today, I was 3-for-5. I pulled one, I hit one up the middle and I hit one to right.

I'm spraying it around pretty good. "But I ask the coaches all the time, where's my power?" The Expos are going to be patient, not only about power but so far as development of the complete player is concerned. Barrett carries 185 pounds trimly on his 6-foot-3 frame. He has good running speed, which explains his 24 stolen bases at the Academy. But he can use more quickness.

The You can wonder why the Rockies would have preferred Saberhagen with his attitude and his contract over Fassero, another lefty who comes at the bargain-basement price of $1.5 million but the Rockies obviously have a little more elbow room than the Expos when it comes to taking on salary. The budget Malone was working with wouldn't have kept Saberhagen in sweat socks. "Claude (Brochu) didn't say yes or no, but I had the feeling that if it was the right guy and I was passionate enough about it he would say 'do Malone said.

"I think I could have gone up to half a million." That's nothing like the budget of the Rockies, who took on the equivalent of the Mexican national debt with Saberhagen's contract, which runs until the 23rd century or until the starship Enterprise comes home, whichever comes first. Given the constraints of a team which basically killed its chances for this year by dumping about 1 4 million in salary in April, Malone did what he could. "These guys (teams like the Rockies can take major steps. We have to take baby steps." This time, at least, even the baby steps weren't there. "The trouble was, it seemed like everybody was looking for someone who could help them in '95 or '96, the same thing we were looking for," Malone said.

"Our strength is with pitching in (Double-A) Harrisburg and position players in (Class-A) Albany. These are people who are going to help you in '98 or '99." Felipe Alou won't lose any sleep over young Mr. Acevedo. "When we saw him, he didn't have good mechanics," Alou said. "He didn't have a good delivery." Alou didn't even know about the Saberhagen trade until his afternoon session with reporters, but he wasn't surprised to find Fassero still in his rotation.

"When we sent (Ugueth) Urbina down," Alou said, "We obviously weren't going to trade Fassero." As for Saberhagen, Alou just grinned, thinking of the thin air in Denver and the way fly balls turn into three-run homers in the Mile-High City. "Saberhagen," Alou said, "is a fly-ball pitcher."
