But now the university owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a new distinction: college campus. The ranking comes courtesy of Fitness magazine, which went in search of the test and fattest schools. Working with the Princeton Review, Fitness surveyed more than 10,000 university students from 660 campuses and released its rankings in its October issue, which hit newsstands this week.

BYU graduate student Jeff Dixon, 26, who lifts weights about four times a week, said regular workouts do more than just whittle his middle. It also helps in mental games. Along with BYU at the top of the list are the University of California, Santa Barbara; Boston University; the University of Vermont; and Northwestern University. Topping the list of the fattest schools: the University of Louisiana, Lafayette; the University of New Orleans; Mississippi State University; Southern Illinois University, Carbondale; and Portland State University. Although the survey Fitness Editor in Chief Neal Boulton believes it paints a of campus environments that can be instructive for their chubbier counterparts. Schools with the highest rankings provided healthy meal programs, good access to education and facilities including trainers and rehabilitation support for injury recovery and high campus safety rates. Most also mandated at least some physical education courses.

The landlords of an Orlando entertainment complex are suing two restaurateurs for refusing to move into a building under renovation because they claim it is haunted. Renovations have stopped, and the building remains empty. Ophelia intensi es; Florida keeps watch By TRAVIS REED Associated Press New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Tropical Storm Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane as it stalled 70 miles off the northeast Florida coast Thursday, churning waves that eroded beaches and drenching the Kennedy Space Center. Thursday night, Ophelia had top sustained winds of 75 mph, just over the hurricane threshold, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said. But forecasters said it was still unclear where Ophelia was headed.

If it hits Florida, it would become the third hurricane to strike the state this year and the seventh in the last 13 months. CUBA 11 p.m. Thursda BAHAMA KGG KGG Hurricane Ophelia Fraternity barred as alcohol infraction echoes death By MONTE WHALEY and JENNIFER BROWN Denver Post Fort Collins, Colo. Colorado State University severed ties with one fraternity and penalized seven other Greek organizations Thursday because of a dawn drinking rite held before classes. School and students said the Sept. 1 incident marking the end of sorority recruiting could not have come at a worse time for the university, which is working to clean up its alcohol-soaked image.

The incident is a violation of said director of Greek life, Mark Koepsell, in an e-mail to Greek chapter presidents. was strongly reminded today that the Greeks at CSU will not survive another negative The moves come while CSU and its fraternities and sorori ties are launching several reforms in the wake of last death of 19-year-old sophomore Samantha Spady, a victim of alcohol poisoning. Her body was found at the Sigma Pi fraternity house Sept. 5, 2004. Her death sparked several changes aimed at quieting the drinking culture at CSU, including the banning of alcohol in all 17 Greek houses.

That rule was broken about 5 a.m. Sept. 1 when sorority and fraternity members drank alcohol at several fraternity houses and private homes to celebrate the end of sorority recruiting during a and ritual, said. The drinking came to light because of noise complaints from neighbors and from some Greeks who objected to the activity, said Anne Hudgens, director of campus life at CSU. As a result, Pi Kappa Alpha was stripped of its student organization status.

The fraternity loses all privileges at CSU. It was punished most severely because of a pattern of problems, Hudgens said. Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and two sororities, Chi Omega and Delta Delta Delta, were sus pended from engaging in any Greek-related activities for one academic year. Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and three sororities Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi and Gamma Phi Beta were put on social probation for one academic year and hold parties or formals. Nichole Borman and Elizabeth Reider, sophomores who participated in and last year, called it a long-standing tradition.
