This captivating adventure features Link, a brave, elflike child hero who must rescue his sister and save the innocents from evil. It’s a standard scenario, but “Zelda” is far from standard. The visual presentation is all about style — not realism — and the game has plenty of it. Its looks are a masterpiece, and the game play is just as polished. The GameCube may not have as many titles as the PlaySta- tion 2 or Xbox, but a game like “The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker” more than fills the void. — T.O. ➤ TENCHU: WRATH OF HEAVEN ➤ Company: Activision ➤ Platform: PlayStation 2 ➤ Price: $49.99 Sneaking in the shadows, booby traps, cutting throats, poison rice balls — it’s the life of the everyday 16th century Japanese ninja. It’s also the subject of “Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven,” the third installment of the series. Playing one of three ninjas, you use a variety of tools and weapons over 25 missions. Although it doesn’t measure up to stealth-based games like “Metal Gear Solid” and “Splinter Cell,” it’s an interesting (and more violent) alternative. Note the “M” rating, though. There are some brutal kill moves in the game. — T.O. ➤ AMPLITUDE ➤ Company: Sony ➤ Platform: PlayStation 2 ➤ Price: $39.99 “Amplitude” is the sequel to “Frequency,” last year’s innovative rhythm game for the PlayStation 2. Unlike the majority of games in the genre, there are no cute rapping characters or formulaic dance steps. Instead, players keep the beat and actually shape the music as they twist down a psychedelic vortex of light and sound. It’s a fun and addictive experience that’s beyond words. “Amplitude” retains the original soul but has some wonderful additions — a bigger, more diverse music selection, new modes and, best of all, online play. — T.O. ➤ FREELANCER ➤ Company: Microsoft ➤ Platform: PC ➤ Price: $49.99 In “Freelancer,” you take the role of Edison Trent, an unlucky space pilot who has lost everything but his ship and his spirit. As the title implies, you take on a variety of jobs to make ends meet. It has many characteristics of a role-playing game, but the space-shooting aspect shines the most. Beautiful environments, intense combat and simple controls make the experience very satisfying. Even if you’re not a fan of sci- fi shooters or RPGs, the presentation and engaging game play might lure you in. — T.O. RATED RATED RATED ➤ SONIC ADVANCE 2 ➤ Company: THQ/Sega ➤ Platform: GameBoy Advance ➤ Price: $29.99 The game play hasn’t evolved too much since Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared on the Sega Genesis several years ago, but that’s part of the charm of “Sonic Advance 2.” Sometimes it’s better not to mess with a good thing. The game is fast. The levels are imaginative and chaotic. And the boss battles are fun. There are some new features: Graphics have ramped up, and there’s a rabbit character named Cream to fight along with Sonic, Tales and Knuckles. If you’re not a fan of Sonic, this one may not win you over. But for followers of the blue hedgehog, this is one of the better games. — T.O. ➤ WINNING ELEVEN 6 ➤ Company: Konami ➤ Platform: PlayStation 2 ➤ Price: $49.99 After an ill-fated and short- lived partnership with ESPN, Konami finally makes its presence known back in the sports market with a U.S. version of the one of the most popular soccer games in the world. Called “Pro Evolution Soccer” in Europe and other countries, this series has already won numerous industry awards and acclaim. “Winning Eleven 6” has the most realistic game play among its peers and is easily the market’s No. 1 soccer title. The only issue is how much of a demand there are for soccer games in the U.S. market. — M.C. RATED RATED RATED RBUSB0330OE11RBUS0330OG11
