THE GAZETTE, MONTREAL, THURSDAY, AUGUST 8, 1991 oday show producer balked at using black 'mugger' in self-defence segment DANA THOMAS WASHINGTON POST to commit a politically incorrect faux pas: Middleton's "assailant" was black. Middleton is white. "They decided that, in trying to be sensitive, they didn't want the mugger represented by an anonymous black male," said Today spokesman Lynn Applebaum. "We didn't want to promote a negative stereotype." So they had Bryant Gumbel step in. "I said, 'He's black, And they said, 'Yes, but it's his said Washington actor Ken Grant, Middleton's original assistant.

"They didn't say, 'You can bring somebody only if he is Middleton said. "As a matter of fact, the three people I was thinking about happen to be black. "I chose Ken because of his acting experience and his martial arts experience. It didn't occur to me (not to bring a black person). It didn't come up.

They said, "Bring somebody for your mugger' and that was it." Middleton, who has taught self-defence and karate in Washington for 20 years, said the segment was rehearsed and taped for a lead-in at the 8 a.m. commercial break. It was then that the decision was made to replace Grant. "They pulled him and said, 'I'm sorry, you're black and it wouldn't look Middleton said she suggested offering a disclaimer before the dem onstration, saying "a mugger could be anybody" and that Grant was one of her students and an actor. "The producer (Wells) said, 'Oh no, we couldn't say anything about that on the They were being so over-sensitive that you can't even mention it.

And Ken winds up getting discriminated against." "It made me feel hollow, very hollow," said Grant, a 29-year-old production assistant for an environmental consulting firm. "I couldn't accept that answer. I didn't feel like it was the truth. If they felt that way, that they were so sensitive, why did they discriminate against me?" WASHINGTON When NBC's Today show invited Washington martial-arts instructor Carol Middlcton to demonstrate how to disarm a mugger, she was told to bring an assistant. She did.

But Monday, a few minutes before they were to go on the air. Today associate producer Cheryl Wells realized she was about 8 4 ioif qame Links is qreaf af you re patient Jack Nicklaus game if you have a iWhaVh mp i npiniHPwipMi i jii ii ipn. ti in ii hiii r- simple computer and the newer PGA Tour Golf (both are good). Power Golf is a pretty decent game for TurboGrafix-16 and the TurboExpress portable. Nintendo's 8-bit NES offers Jack Nicklaus's Greatest Holes of Major Championship Golf, Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf and Bandai Golf Challenge Pebble Beach.

New is NES Open, starring the Mario Bros. Coming soon: Greg Norman Power Golf. PGA Tour Golf is also coming to Nintendo's new 16-bit Super NES, along with Hole-In-One. The pretty but pricey Neo Geo 32-bit system, that lets you bring arcade games home (more on this later) is offering Top Players Golf. But the highlight of Jack Nicklaus Unlimited is the course editing and design feature, which lets you literally design your own golf course from scratch and then piay on it. You choose the setting (for example, seaside).

Then you edit the terrain to suit your liking. Then you lay down the fairways using what looks like a computer paint program. You landscape each course with trees, shrubs, rocks, sand traps, water hazards or even plop down a club house in a most unlikely place (like in the middle of the fairway). Jack gives tips and advice throughout the design process. You can even edit his quotes, making Jack pop up and comment on your course as the game is being played.

(Before Hole 1 0 on my own version of the Pignolia Pines G.C., Jack pops up to say: Watch out for the two clubhouses right in the middle of the fairway. Only a rotten like Burrill would put clubhouses on the fairway. Goof. Loser. Get a life." As you can see, this is unlimited fun for the whole warped family.

Accolade has been providing good golf games since ancient computer times (five years ago). Their Mean 18 was among the first really good golf games. Jack Nicklaus Unlimited keeps the good points of Mean 1 8, like ease of play, but vastly improves the crude graphics and choice of features. Links is also a major improvement over another good, early Access computer golf game, World Class Leader Board. Many other pretty good video golf games are out there, too: Sega fans can choose between Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf mtm CI NAKED GUN 2 12 THE SMELL OF FEAR (G) Dolby 1 00 3 05-7 20 AGENT FAIT LA FARCE 2 1 17 (G) Dolby Nighlly 5 10-9 05 V.I.

Links, by Access, offers some of the best graphics you'll see in any game. Not just any golf game, but any game, period. The vivid scenes look almost photographic in their clarity, detail and shading. But the RAM (computer memory) required to ram these pretty pictures through the monitor means that Links plays as slowly as a box of rocks, even on a quick 386 computer.

After each shot, you have to sit and watch as the screen repaints the next image before your eyes. This can take anywhere from a dozen seconds on a faster 386 computer, to two minutes on a slower 286 machine. The result: In Links, a game of computer golf can take longer than a real game of golf. Fussy controls "And the game has a fussy control system. Almost every golf game in existence has used a vertical bar to set power and accuracy of a swing.

But in Links, the power bar is curved, like a C. It's a hazard, even for veteran computer duffers. The sound in Links is fantastic. But again, you need the mother of all computers and a sound board to r-r Links, by Access Terrific graphics Zf it's slow as a box of rocks Lksrie Videos Accessories Magazines MOBSTERS (14 yrs) Dolby Stereo 1:30 4:00 7:00 9:15 POINT BREAK (14 yrs) Dolby Stereo 1:15 4:00 7:00 9:30 Except Thur. The real fault is not in Links.

You have to applaud Access for producing a quality piece of work. But the problem is that most home computers have simply not caught up to the technology required to play Links. Of course, if you do have a super quick computer with VGA graphics, sound board, and a couple of megs of RAM, by all means take to the links with Links. After all, it was made for you. For those with a slightly more moronic computer, a great alternative is Jack Nicklaus Unlimited Golf and Course Design, by Accolade.

Where Links offers only one golf course, the courses are unlimited in the new Jack Nicklaus game, because you can design them yourself. Scenes re-draw fast The Nicklaus graphics aren't as pretty as in Links, but at least you can run them on a slower machine, and you don't need a top VGA monitor to see them. It'll run on the lesser EGA monitors. Jack Nicklaus Unlimited plays smoothly and quickly. The scenes re-draw fast.

And you can savor your best whacks in reverse-angle replays. Nicklaus comes with Muirfield Village Golf Club, perhaps the best of the courses that Jack built. And accessory disks let you add courses. One such disk presents the Major Championship Courses of 1991: MOBSTERS (14 yrs) Dolby Stereo i 5:00 7:00 9:00 Late Show Fri. Sal.
