As a youth delivering papers, he made an with The Journal to enlarge his route and ajlow him to work for the priced a new motorcycle. Byles in mall premises at 411 Laurier Avenue, between Kent and Streets. He soon acquired reputation for bicycles, motorcycle and expert repair service.

In six months he faced the need for larger premises and moved to 260 Albert Street. Two years later he bought out Flegg's bicycle store at' 278 Bank Street, he remained for over five years. In those days the east side of Bank Street was the busy side, sunny and hrightrThis brought I about the inove of Bvles to 285 Bank Street In 1923. Still expanding, the firm moved to 305 Bank Street in, 1928. A few years later they bought the adjoining store and doubled tea size to the present premises.
