The panic began last week, when Mavrody, the company president, criticism of MMM by government has promised that MMM will buy officials caused the share price to drop like a stone. Following the rules of a classic pyramid scheme in which previous investors are paid with cash collected from new investors but nothing is actually produced the MMM shares had been soaring.

Shareholders began flocking to the Moscow headquarters of MMM last Thursday to demand their money back. The stock, which had risen in a few months from a dollar to $50, is now worth about 50 cents. The shareholders are still there, some weeping by the front gates, others, more resigned, lounging and drinking beer. And for perhaps the first time in Russian history, it was the young man in shorts and designer sunglasses who sternly scolded the Russian babushka. "You should have known it was a gamble," the man, who described back shares from unhappy investors eventually.

To buy time and good will, MMM said yesterday that i it would buy out the neediest cases at the stock's highest price, $50. More than a thousand pensioners, invalids, Afghan war veterans, and the like, scribbled out long, handwritten petitions pleading their cases for emergency relief. "I live with my son; I have cancer," said Gallina Urusova, 67, as she filled out her request to get her money back. "I just wanted to save up a little money for my burial." Fifty of the applicants received cash on Sunday, but those lucky few did not stick around to savor their good fortune. One woman, dragging her 9-year-old daughter by the hand, hastily stuffed the ruble bills in her purse and bolted for the door.

Outside, hundreds pressed against the gate, asking almost in a chant: "Did you get it? Did you get it?" Man convicted of mentally injuring son in mother's death gets 10-17 years ASSOCIATED COLUMBUS, Ohio A man accused of bludgeoning his wife to death and letting his 6-year-old son find the body was convicted yesterday of "mentally assaulting" the boy and sentenced to 10 to 17 years in prison. Edward Elliott, 52, is believed to be the first person to be convicted under a provision of Ohio's assault law that protects those who suffer a mental illness as the result of a crime. The charges stemmed from the 1988 slaying of Elliott's estranged wife, Barbara, who was beaten to death with an antique iron. Elliott was tried for aggravated murder in 1989, but the jury deadlocked and the judge dismissed the charge. After Elliott and his son, Eddie, moved to Missoula, Elliot last year confessed to the slaying on the advice of a medical professional.

He was brought back to Ohio to face new charges. Prosecutors argued that Elliot left the house knowing his son would find the body. Assistant Prosecutor Dan Hogan said the boy was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder from finding the body and required prolonged psychiatric treatment. Eddie, now 12, has had nightmares about his mother and reacts violently when he sees yellow tape similar to what police used to cordon off the murder scene at his home, Hogan said. Judge Dale Crawford sentenced Elliott to eight to 15 years in prison for felonious assault and child endangering, plus two years for perjury, based on his innocent plea in the first murder trial.
