Students were asked to pay 1 (in a raffle for $400 worth of Levi's 501s) or bring in a gift of non-perishable food. Proceeds go to Sun Youth. Organizing-committee members Rhonda Sherwood and Jennifer Randall said the experience of working on the campaign gave them an insight you just cannot gain from textbooks. I left the pub at 12:30 a.m., when the party was just heating up. Everyone was in jeans myself included.

Thursday night, dozens of students, fond of going ouchless and zipperless. gathered at Gert's Pub on the campus of McGill University, in their jeans, for a night of comparing, admiring and competition.

Not likely to become an Olympic sport, the "Button-Your-Fly Speed Race" involved some serious challengers. Rob Clarkson, Peter Moffett and Justin Trudeau (yes, THE Justin Trudeau, were the three finalists (out of about 17) with the quickest times in buttoning up. Moffett's winning time of about eight seconds won him a new pair of the Levi's 501s. Boxer shorts were very much in evidence during the contest; red hearts and pink pigs caught the eye. Law students John Levinson and Michael Padfield were celebrating their first court cases that day, in jeans, shirts, ties, neat jackets.

Yalmaz Siddiqui and Gerrie Valle wore the most ripped jeans; Sondra Hum and Rob Sinclair decorated their 501s with Ouchless buttons. Paul Coleman and Picole Poirier had just met, but were a team in the "Button Your Friend's Fly" contest which preceded the "Best Buns" contest and a couple of others. All of this got its start when the people at Levi's 501 Jeans sent invitations to the marketing departments of major Canadian universities challenging them to compete in the fourth annual "Create An Advertising Campaign" contest. The theme was "Bonds of Time" (tying in with the history of Levi's button jeans, which have been around since the gold-rush days of the 1 850s). The Gert's Pub event was just part of efforts by the mar I vHiL-i i Leslie Calder, Rick Baker, Katie Bumstead, Leandro Lagera, Rags Durvasula Delando Hawthorne, Jennifer Randan, Rhonda Sherwood, Rocco Calabrese.
