What we're talking about are those outrageous small folk first brought to light in the international best-seller, Gnomes, by Wil Huygen and Rien Poortvliet.

Now the Gnomes spring to life under the direction of animator Jack Zander. CBS broadcasts the hour-long special tonight. Tom Moore, president of Tomorrow Entertainment, purchased the television rights to the book. "CBS didn't want the run-of-the-' mill limited animation that is the mark of so many specials," said Zander. "So they put a lot of extra money into it to make it the best picture they could." Zander had never before directed or produced an animated feature Film.

At the end of World War II, instead of returning to the animation shops of Hollywood, he set up his own in New York. He became known for Tony the Tiger, the Jolly Green Giant and Mr. Clean. He was the man who brought animation to the television commercial. Those commercials attracted signed to bring Gnomes to life.

"We had a lot of stops and starts in the beginning," said Zander. "CBS was very frightened because I had no track record. They asked me if I could work with Chuck Jones. I said I could, but it was my picture. "Then, early in the picture, Chuck bowed out, but the fact that Chuck was available was reassuring to CBS." Jones is the creator of Bugs Bunny and produced some of the Dr.

Seuss specials for CBS. "It took a year of drawing to animate the special, once we got going," Zander said. "Sometimes CBS would come to us with 'constructive That always stopped us dead in our tracks." One of the first things that had to be worked out was a story.
