Ultimately it began last evening when a neighbor chanced by and brought me a pan of cherry tomatoes. As she set them on the cabinet her remark went something like this "if you want these little red peas you can have them, I'll not spend a moment pealing them, and if you don't want to bother working them up some way, dump 'em!" Then I carried in, from the porch, a couple boxes of what is known as Italian tomatoes.

Great for making tomato paste, as they do not have to be pealed. This gal uses them to make tomato juice and what is better than home canned tomato juice? Along about midnight, the discouraging thought entered my mind that this household had given away almost all of the canning jars this past spring. If I'd had a husband at that moment I'd have snapped at him'. Instead I yelled at the poodle, Mr. Tuff, sleeping under the kitchen table, "What in the world am I going to do for jars for that tomato juice?" He opened one eye and wagged his snub of a tail and went back to sleep.

Off to bed I went, with a specific feeling that I'd probably oversleep, and that resulted in trouble tossing of all of a couple hours in bed, and this morning I did oversleep and I was just about as irritable and bleary -eyed a gal as you will find outside an institution. Trouble started right away. The phone rang, and then it did it again, and again, and all the time I was trying to prepare breakfast and sort tomatoes, look for empty jars and uncover a box of new lids I'd hid someplace, but where! After a couple hours I located them, right where I'd hid them, could have driven to Topeka and back, purchasing another box, at that rate. When will I ever learn not to put things away so I can't find them.

Managed to find four empty jars, hoping that would be enough. Knowing it wouldn't be, I looked for a pint, thinking that would be the right amount to seal all that juice for when the snow flies. I could bite some folks, a friend called about then and said, "Guess what I'm making?" I bit and said, "what?" "Cinnamon rolls." Too far to go to her house to sample those she was making, so I made a pan of my own. Between canning tomato juice, making the rolls, trying to mend a few things, and transplant a couple house plants I almost forgot to write this column. Of course the jars and the juice didn't come out even, I had too much of one jar and not enough juice.

Anyone who has canned at any time knows what I'm talking about. Therefore I have half a pint of tomato juice and tomorrow if the weather isn't too warm, I'm going to fix a batch of stew in the crock pot and then it will be time to pick a few more tomatoes. Scarce as they are around this place this year, I'm going to pop ewyone I have in a can. Just removed those cinnamon rolls from the oven and they look delicious. If I don't overeat, I'll be around next week.
