Friday, November 13, 1970 The Manhattan Mercury IB contest is prep tiitt JOT we've faced all year," Wildcat coach Vince Gibson said earlier in the week. "This is the best Nebraska team we have played against, but it's also the best K-State team Nebraska has faced." The Cornhuskers feature a high-powered offense that is averaging better than 36 points a game. The Wildcats feature the Big Eight's best defense. "They (Nebraska) have great offensive balance," Gibson said. "We'll need a super effort defensively.

We've got to really shut down their offense. But our defensive has had a pattern of playing well in big games." Nebraska's offense is centered around not one but two outstanding quarterbacks. Van Brownson is scheduled to start, but if he can't get the job done, the Huskers will bring in Jerry Tagge who is equally pressive. In Jeff Kinney, Johnny Rodgers and Dan Schneiss, Nebraska has such a talented backfield.that Joe Ordunaan All-Big Eight selection two years ago, can't crack the starting lineup. Veteran Nebraska coach Bob Devaney knows the talents of the Cats' defense.

"K-State has a tremendous defense unit, so we'll be facing as tough or tougher team than we've met all year," he said. The Wildcats appear to be in good shape injury wise for the game. The only doubtful starter is senior Oscar Gibson who has been hobbled by a twisted knee sustained in the Oklahoma State game. If Gibson can't play, either Wayne Brodman or Jim Dukelow will fill in. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., and Memorial Stadium has been sold out for weeks.

The game may be heard on radio over The K-State Network, WIBW in Topeka and KWBB in Wichita. By DAVE WRIGHT Mercury Sports Editor LINCOLN, Nebr. The waiting is over. All the ballyhoo and talk doesn't mean a thing now.

Kansas State has waited a long time to play in another Big Eight championship game. The 20th ranked Wildcats will get their chance Saturday against unbeaten and fourth ranked Nebraska in Lincoln. The Wildcats haven't won a conference title since 1934. Since Vince Gibson came to Kansas State four years ago, these two teams have had some battle that will make your hair stand up. The first year, a fourth quarter field goal gave the Cornhuskers a 16-14 victory in old Memorial Stadium.

The last time the Cats went to Lincoln, they came away with a 12-0 upset victory. Then last year, Nebraska won, 10-7, as the game ended with K-State on the Husker six yard line. If the pattern follows true, Saturday's battle should give the 68,000 fans in NU's Memorial Stadium a thrill well worth the ticket scalper's a price. And about two-and-a-half more inches shoulder room in front and six more inches in back. Duster's a five passenger car with a trunk that holds 15.9 cubic feet of things. Vega is a four passenger car with 9.3 cubic feet of room for hauling things. That means Duster can handle one more passenger and a lot more stuff than Vega.

But a torsion bar works by twisting and returning to its original shape. The way a piece of rubber hose reacts when you twist it. Duster has 14 inch wheels. Vega's wheels are 13 Inches. And Duster has an 11 inch advantage in wheelbase.

We believe all this adds up to better handling and stability for Duster. capable of beating us. They have been able to score a lot of points in most games." The Sooners are ready except for linebacker Forb Phillips, who has an injured knee and may not play. The game brings together the league's two top rushers John Riggins of Kansas and Wylie. Iowa State, the Big Eight's No.

1 team in pass defense, will be facing the league's top club in rushing defense in Missouri. Coach Johnny Majors describes Iowa State as "the best losing ball club I've ever been around." Missouri Coach Dan Devine, who stands to have a losing season for the first time in his long coaching career, has dismissed defensive back Lorenzo Brinkley from the squad. George Fountain will get Brinkley's assignment. Mike Farmer, injured the last three weeks, is expected to return to quarterback for Missouri. Colorado stands a chance to fatten its top rushing offense average against the Cowboys, who have the league's leading passer in Tony Pounds, the top receiver in Hermann Eben and a great deceptive runner in Dick Graham.

Colorado's hopes rest on tne shoulders of three powerful runners, John Tarvcr, Ward Walsh and Jon Keyworth, and a speed demon in Clifford Branch. KANSAS CITY (AP) Kansas State has had a big circle around the date of Nov. 14 this entire football season. That is the Wildcats' date -with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and it arrives Saturday. Some 67,000 spectators will be on hand at Lincoln, to watch the biggest game of the Big Eight campaign.

Nebraska, 5-0 in the league, is the nation's fourth ranked team. Kansas State, 5-1, is No. 20. The Big Eight championship may or may not be decided in the game. The Oklahoma Sooners, who also figure in the race, play at Kansas.

If they beat the Jayhawks, the Nebraska-Kansas State collision, won't settle things. If Oklahoma, 3-1, beats Kansas, 2-i 3, this is the picture at Lincoln: If Nebraska wins, Kansas State will be eliminated. If Kansas State wins, the two will be deadlocked. In that event, the Wildcats will have to sweat out the outcome of the Nebraska-Oklahoma game Nov. 21.

If the game ends in a tie, the Wildcats would-be in that same wait and see situation. Saturday's two other games find. Iowa State, 0-5, at Missouri, 2-3, and Colorado, 2-4, at Oklahoma State, 1- 3' Nebraska Coach Bob Devaney's biggest worry is Lynn Dickey, who holds all Big Eight passing records. Devaney has spent most of the week brushing up on pass defense, more specifically rushing Mr. Dickey.

At least twice this season, Dickey has yanked the Wildcats from behind with his aerial show. This isn't a big factor, of course, since Tagge and Brownson have shared the post all season, and one has been just about as effective as the other. Star linebacker Oscar Gibson is on Kansas State's doubtful list.

Coach Vince Gibson would feel much better if Oscar is able to play. If not, the slot will be shared by Jim Dukelow and Wayne Brodman. "Nebraska is an excellent football team," says Vince Gibson. "This is the best Nebraska team we've faced but we are also the best Kansas State team that Nebraska has played against." Sugar, Cotton and Orange Bowl scouts will view the proceedings. They want a good look at Nebraska.

A Big Eight and NCAA probation prohibits Kansas State from bowl participation. Underdog Kansas would like to shatter Oklahoma's title hopes. The Jayhawks haven't beaten the Sooners since 1964. In 1968, Kansas had a 9-1 regular season. The loss was to Oklahoma 27-23.

Coach Pepper Rodgers of Kansas knows his team must stop Joe Wylie, the Sooners' fabulous sophomore, and the passing and option running of Jack Mildren. "We have to stop them from making the long plays," Rodgers says. "We always seem to bring out the best in Oklahoma. Wylie he's been sensational all year."
