1 J. i I i z. Thursday, November 12, 1970 The Mahnattan Mercury IB Sports lidians invade Salina Dave Sports passes in a game against Great Bend. On defense Emerson made known that the Mustangs show strength in that phase of the game. "They have half of their starters back that were juniors last year," he said.

It will be an important game for both teams, as they will be hoping to end their seasons with 6-3 slates. Indian mentor, J. W. Emerson says the Mustangs should be ready for the Tribe and he looks for a good meeting between the two teams.

"I think they will be up for us," commented Emerson, because we are both 5-3 and because we are primarily senior ball clubs. 'The seniors on both teams would like to go out with a win." The Mustangs return 15 lettermen from last years' squad that posted a 3-6 record overall and 3-2 in conference play. Of the 15 returnees about half are on offense and the other half the defense. Offensively Emerson pointed out that Central has a balanced attack and can run and pass well, but mostly stays with their running game. But he quickly added that they did throw five touchdown defensive tackles in Greg Thompson and Scott Shuman," he added.

According to Emerson the Indians should mentally and physically be ready for the fray. "We've had good practice sessions this week," praised the Indians mentor. "There was a lot of enthusiasm and the boys are looking forward to the game." Leading the Mustangs in the back-field will be Mike Lindsay a 6-1 190 pound quarterback, Rich Tholstrup a 5-11 175 pound running back, Ken Seim a 5-10 180 pound fullback, and Sam Haggard a 6-0 170 pound running back and linebacker. Defensive standouts beside Thompson and Shuman are Jerry Amyotte a 6-0 175 pound defensive halfback, and Joe Schurr a 5-8 165 pound linebacker. Sign Hazelton NEW ORLEANS (AP) The New Orleans Saints of the NFL Wednesday signed cornerback Major Hazelton, formerly with the Chicago Bears, as a free agent.

Rowers honored at crew banquet Al Koch was named captain of the Kansas State crew at an awards banquet following the crew's intra-squad race Saturday night. Pete Walsh was chosen as the most inspirational rower for the 1970 season. Two scholarship awards were made. Phil Lerner, who had a 3.7 grade point average, got the varsity honor and Dave Goodsel, with a 3.571, got the freshman award. Mickey Evans, head "of the physical education department at K-State, received the Don Rose Trophy for the person outside the crew who had contributed the most.

nerback because of his play against Missouri last week. He is the 11th sophomore on the OU starting 22, offensively and defensively. At Iowa State, Coach Johnny Majors told his squad "we have to try to move the ball against Missouri's rushing defense," then sent it through a 90-minute workout in sweat clothes. And the Missouri team pranced through a 95-minute session, tapering off what Coach Dan Devine described as "the best practice week of the season Oklahoma State concentrated on Colorado's passing attack. "Our team's mental attitude is improving," Coach Floyd Gass said.

"It had better because Colorado is loaded." IKcbH ua cm itdD The pressure of Saturday's Kansas State-Nebraska Big Eight championship game is not bothering Vince Gibson, at least outwardly. The Wildcat head man was in a jovial mood at Wednesday's weekly Booster Club meeting. He wasted no time in ribbing athletic director Ernie Barrett who won the club's weekly football picking contest. Barrett missed but two games and made his picks by alternating his choices from one side to the other as he went down the sheet. "There won't be any more contests, and it's not because we ran out of footballs (the winners' prize)," Gibson grinned.

"When anyone wins like that, it's time to But it wasn't hard to tell the championship game was on Gibson's mind. He started his talk by telling the group of the five goals they had set before the season. Heading that list was winning the Big Eight championship. Winning the title was followed by maintaining pride and poise, playing reckless football, having great squad morale and being totally committed to the program. All the goals have been followed except winning the title.

The Cats get their chance at that Saturday. "All along, we've been preaching the Big Eight championship," Gibson said. "We have a ladder on our scouting board that leads to a championship trophy. Now we're up to the last step on that ladder. We get to play Nebraska for the championship.

But our goal is to win the championship, not just to play for it." CLEAOTCE By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS If Wednesday's drills were any indication, both Kansas State and Nebraska will be shelling each other with passes in Saturday's crucial Big Eight football game at Lincoln. The weather was cold and wet, but that didn't keep K-State inside, and the Cornhuskers worked on their passing game outside, although they went inside for therest of the practice. Nebraska quarterback Van Brownson, sidelined with a sore elbow last week, was throwing in fine shape and Coach Bob Devaney said "he should be okay for Saturday." Devaney said he hasn't yet made up his mind whether Brownson or Jerry Tagge will start at quarterback. There was no doubt who would start for the Wildcats. Lynn Dickey is the man, and Coach Vince Gibson put it on the line.

"For us to win," he said, "we'll have to shut Nebraska's offense down, and we're going to have to play our best game of the year." Both Oklahoma and Kansas reported spirited practices in preparation for their big game at Lawrence Saturday. The Sooners have to beat the Jayhawks to stay alive in the conference race. KU also practiced in a cold rain, "but the effort was good," Coach Pepper Rodgers said. "It's always good." He predicted the Sooners would try to work their triple option offense against the Jays and pass only if they had to. TOPEKA (AP) Regular season play comes to an end this week for Kansas high school football teams, with contenders for state championship playoff spots hoping to pick up the points they need for the action leading to a state title. Wichita North and Wichita Southeast meet Friday night in a game that will decide which of the two teams will represent Region II in the state Class 5A championship game. Wichita North, runner-up for the state title a year ago, is 5-2-1 for the season; Southeast is 6-2. Saturday night, Shawnee Mission North and Topeka play for the Sunflower League championship.

As league champion, the winner automatically becomes the Region I representative in the state 5A championship game. Shawnee Mission North, defending 5A champion, Is 8-0 for the year; Topeka 6-2. Topeka West plays Wyandotte in the Sunflower League playoff round, but the result won't affect the playoffs since West already has the Dist. 1 spot wrapped up for the Class 4A playoffs. Dodge City, 8-0, also has a 4A playoff spot assured and will meet The other playoff spot in Class 4A will go to Pittsburg, 7-0-1, Coffey ville, 6-1-1, or Ola the, 5-3.

Pittsburg winds up regular season play against Columbus; Coffeyville plays Independence, and Olathe meets Turner. A big game In Class 3A will match Bonner Springs, the 1969 runner-up for the state championship, against Ottawa. Both have 8-0 records. The winner probably will represent Dist. 4 in the Class 3A playoffs, although Paola and Shawnee St.

Joseph, both 8-0. are still In contention. Paola plays Osawatomie and St. Joseph goes against Imaculate. The Cats took the last step toward that championship game by beating Oklahoma State, 28-15, last week.

Gibson admitted he had been a little wary of the Cowboys early last week. "As the week went along, I felt better, because I knew we were a better team," he said. "And we were. We hit Oklahoma State like they haven't been hit before. We knocked them up in the bleachers.

There were some explosive licks out there. "The score should have been worse than it was, but we made too many mistakes. And the thing of it is, they (mistakes) aren't bothering our kids. All it's doing is driving me crazy." Gibson then turned to unbeaten and fourth-ranked Nebraska and voiced confidence. "Ever since Saturday, I've been thinking, 'how can we beat Nebraska he said.

"But I like to play Nebraska. When I first came here, even with the losing tradition and all, our kids felt like they could beat Nebraska. "In two years, they have only scored one touchdown on us. Believing is the key to winning. We always play well in Lincoln, but Nebraska has been playing pretty well in Lincoln this year, also." Gibson said the Wildcats would have to play their best game of the season to win Saturday.

"We're playing a lot better offensively than we have played all year," he said. "We'll need a super effort defensively. But our defense has always played well in the big games." The Wildcats don't Intend to play dead, and Gibson Is expecting another great game. "We're going to Nebraska feeling like we can win the ballgame, and I wouldn't tell you that If I didn't believe It," he said. "Remember, the pressure is on Nebraska, and not m.

They have to worry about things like which bowl they're going to."
