Sally Field Looks To New Fields HOLLYWOOD let anyone talk you into taking acting That was the sage advice Sally Field, the ebullient title star of Flying series on the ABC Television Network, received very early in her career. And now, just as her successful series is about to move to a new p.m. Friday time slot next week, Sally is about to ignore that dictum. Sally had just graduated from Birmingham High School in the San Fernando Valley section of Los Angeles. When older and more experienced actors and directors warned her to protect her natural ability.

It was at the workshop that she was spotted by Eddie Foy III, casting director for Screen Gems. From 175 applicants, he picked her for the title role in the series. As Sally captivated the television audience and when the series was canceled, she have to look for work. The studio looked for a new series that would suit her talents. Miss Sherwood is a member of the Studio. Because of her, Sally became interested in working with the West Coast branch of the studio. were two things that convinced me I should develop whatever acting talent I Sally explains. RESPECT FOR MADELEINE was my respect for Madeleine and the variety of acting she is capable of simply because she has the talent and has worked at developing it. was just a kid at the time but big real big. She took me down to the local theatre in Berkeley, where we lived and pushed me in through the back door. 1 was scared until I walked out onto the stage and then it hit me. It really did. Not the stage but the acting bit.

From that day on I was never in doubt about my future Culp was talking during a break in rehearsals of John which will be seen in color on On 10-11 p.m. Friday. I 1 started, just as an amateur of course, I found I myself playing a succession of I juvenile roles by night and pole: vaulting by day. was keen on track and field and decided to concentrate on the pole vault. People used to think I was nuts but I taught myself the technique and I perservered.

In pole vaulting you have to get used to the 'idea of turning over in midair and it took some time before found the nerve to do it. One day I took off as usual, landed 'with a thump which winded me and tore just about every muscle I had, and realized that somewhere in between I had turned over. FELL ON BACK few weeks later I landed on the back of my head and tore my neck and shoulder muscles to shreads and they carted me off to the doctor. He told me to give up the vault and take it easy for the next eight months. weeks later I went out and vaulted nine feet, 11 inches, breaking the school record by some 11 inches and it still I went to see the doctor and told him and he said: done son.

but be sorry when you're was right too: the trouble gets worse each year. I carried on acting and vaulting until it got to affect my life. 1 used to shout a lot in my sleep and one night I awoke with the rest of the guys in the dormitory clustered around the bed. they said. got to give.

You can act or you can vault, but we need our sleep and not going to let you do ENDED VAULTING the vaulting ended, 1 got rid of the pole and put away the uprights and cross-bar the family had made me. I was on an athletics scholarship too. the acting thing was getting a stronger hold on me and with only 11 hours to go before graduation I woke up, thought just don't belong and Culp made his way to New York, suffered the same hardships and deprivations as many of his contemporaries and eventually talked his way into a leading role off-Broadway. It won his a award and set him up for a string of successes which eventually were to lead him to Hollywood, and nationwide fame in and other television programs. says Bob, got me to vault, just one more time, for an program.
