THE GAZETTE, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1964 23 akMoi l7 Art Buchwcld Examines: Goren ON BRIDGE The 'Silent Voter In The U.S. marked down on the polling sheet next to his name We got up and tried to shake hands with him again, but he still refused. So we rv THE REALM OF WASHINGTON THERE HAS BEEN a great deal of talk this election about the "silent vote." The silent voter may be the key to next week's election, because he is the one who refuses to tell the pollsters whom he is really for. We were very fortunate to interview one of these silent voters the other clay. He happened to be a neighbor and when we went over to the house to talk to him his wife answered the door.

'Good day, ma'am, I'm taking a poll of silent vot ers and I was wondering if I could talk to your husband." "You can try, but I don't think you'll have much luck. He ain't said a word to me since the Republican convention." She invited us into the livingroom. Her husband was sitting in straight-backed chair, staring out the window. "George, there's a fellow here from the press wants to talk to you about the election." George refused to stand up or shake hands. His wife said, "I told you he wouldn't cooperate.

All he does is sit there in the chair and purse his lips." "Sir," we said, "I know you don't want to talk much, but the election is only a few days away and the silent vote could be a big factor in the election. Ould you give me some sort of hint of whom you favor?" George grunted. "What did he mean by that0" we asked his wife. "He's either trying to say something." she replied, "or else he's hungry." "Sir, I know your vole is secret and I certainly do not want to violate a confidence, but if we can't gauge the silent vote our polls may be way off and this could cause havoc with our free election system." George snarled and showed his teeth. "Did I get him angry?" "No, he does that about once every lb minutes.

He's probably thinking of one of the issues that gets him furious." "George," we pleaded, "I'm not going to use your name. This will be just between you and me. Perhaps I'll ask questions and then all you have to do is nod your head yes or no." George picked up a copy of "A Texan Looks at Lyndon" and pretended he was reading it. "Since George has become a silent voter," his wife explained, "he reads a lot." Suddenly a fly whizzed by George's face and landed on the window sill. George took his book and brought it down on the fly's head.

He smiled. "George is part of the white backlash," his wife said. But George didn't smile long. All at once his face turned red and his eyes became purple as he stared out the window. We looked out the window and saw two seven-year-olds fighting for a football.

His wife rushed over to him and tried to calm him down. She turned to us and said. "George hates violence in the streets." We made one more attempt to talk to him, but he threw a copy of the "Conscience of a Conservative" at our head. "I think you'd better leave now. His precinct captain said he shouldn't have too many visitors." Duchess Gives You Comfort The Duchess of Windsor was thinking of the many beautiful widely spaced prints when she designed this costume.

You carefully place the two bodice pieces over the largest, loveliest part of your print. She suggested red velvet for the belt, neckline, and stole facing, but you should do it in the darkest color of your print. Satin is just as good a trimming, particularly if you make it in linen or wool. The Duchess gives you comfort! Two pockets in the skirt placed slightly to the front of side darts, (the most flattering spot for pocket bulk). The skirt is made of three panels and the dress has a side zipper.

You anchor the stole with your own pin and only little hidden hook and eye. Make this design in anything plain, as well as printed velvet, velveteen, corduroy, brocade, satin, peau light weight wool, and all those wonderful cottons. You will need extra yardage when you use a beautiful widely spaced print. But you can use the left over material to slip cover an evening bag. Spadea's exclusive ready-to-wear sizes produce a better fit.

It is neither infectious nor contagious. If it is not of the rare systemic type, and the affected areas are covered, it may need no treatment except removal of the scales with soap and water. Treatment is often disappointing. The best remedy is exposure to natural sunlight: sunlamps are less effective. A great many systemic and local remedies have been tried, but none is satisfactory for any length of time.

Coal tar ointments are perhaps the most successful, but they are distasteful to the patient because of staining of clothes and bedding. Mercurial ointments are less objectionable, and are therefore more accep-. table to patients, and for that reason are more likely to be used with success. The advertised psoriasis "cures" are often based on mercurial compounds. There is no cure for psoriasis; there is only medical treatment, intensive or continuous as the extent and location of the eruption requires.

I The name of the disease ccmes from the Greek psora an itch Actually it is a pain in the necB for many thousands of young people, and some not so yiung, who are deprived of many pleasures because of the disfiguring eruption which causes them to shrink from wearing suits or low-necked dresses or short-sleeves. Psoriasis is a red patchy condition, covered with silvery scales, which appears mainly on the scalp, back, and outer surfaces of the arms and legs, especially the knees and the elbows. Except for one form which represents about 15 percent of all cases, it is not serious nor disabling in itself, and the itching can usually be controlled.

The more serious forms involve the muscles and the joints and may resemble rheumatoid arthritis. The disease tends to become worse in the winter months, and to improve some during warm weather, but seldom to the extent of disappearing, except in the very mildest cases. Most cases appear during the teens, and may remain undiscovered or not noticed as long as they remain on the covered portions of the body. It is when they begfin to disfigure the exposed skin that they cause distress, and of course young people are exposing more skin than ever these days.
