A $7,500 bond has been set for Hodge, also still in custody, who is charged with one count of aggravated robbery. When officers answered the call Friday morning, "They confiscated a handgun from them, arrested them and took them back to headquarters for booking," said La Vergne Assistant Police Chief Mar-lene Hall. "They were trying to process Tomblin, and he produced a gun as they were escorting from the car," Hall said. After wielding the gun, Tomblin fired on the officers, who shot back and wounded Tomblin in the shoulder, said La Vergne Assistant City Manager Dwayne Hicks. "Fortunately, they were able to subdue him," Hall said.

The officers were unharmed, and (Tomblin) was treated for gunshot wounds and has been discharged." Tomblin was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center following the shooting, Hicks said. The incident is under investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as a standard policy, Hall said. The officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation. ffilMO Ik BEST BUY1 sti $28.99 month Ful Sett $39.99 numft; Mr. Eating (Continued from page 1) Mandy Millard, 6, was curious about the task of writing.

Wilson (Continued from page 1) million worth of infrastructure improvements in the area. New roads and utility extensions into the area are essential for the proposed racetrack's success, they said, noting the facility would open with 50,000 seats and expand to 150,000 seats later. Dover Downs plans to move the NASCAR Busch Series and Craftsman Truck Series races from its Nashville Speedway USA track to the new facility, which may get a coveted Winston Cup date if approved by NASCAR. A sports authority, Dover Downs officials said, could be formed to seek a bond issue on the infrastructure improvements, which could be repaid through tax assessment districts and revenue generated from the racetrack itself. Dover Downs predicts the facility will pump $222 million into the region's economy annually and' generate about $1.7 million in annual sales and property tax revenues for Wilson County.

"It does not need to be at any time a burden on the taxpayers of this community," Thompson said of the infrastructure improvements. Lannom agreed. "We've been asked to sign a blank check, and the amount will be filled in later," he said of local and state assistance. Several racetrack opponents who've dubbed themselves "County Residents Against Racetrack Havoc" said traffic congestion, noise and possible adverse effects to the environment ought to be considered before a decision is made. The three county commissioners agreed.

writing," Pirtle said. Two of Phiffer's children's books, "The Edible ABCs" and "My First Book of Prayers," are part of a four-book collection entitled "Puppy Tales" published by Dalmatian Press. Pirtle recommended several books suitable for reading aloud to young children. They include "Amelia Bedelia," "Frederick," 'The Midnight Eaters," "The Very Hungry Caterpillar," "So Much," "Stellaluna," "No Jumping on the Bed" and "The Biggest Bear "It was built after World War II," Hood said. The new bridge will "be much wider and much safer," he said.

Completion of the new bridge is scheduled on or before Nov. 30, 2000, Hood said. "There are a lot of people against the racetrack, but we have a lot more people who are for the racetrack," said Rutherford County resident Connie Black, spokeswoman for a group of racetrack proponents calling themselves "I Back the Track." She then handed Wilson County Executive Robert Dedman a petition signed by 6,000 people in favor of building the racetrack. Dover Downs Vice President Don Stansbury said the infrastructure improvements new roads and extending utilities to the area also could be used for accompanying industrial development around 4he track, The company, which owns several racetracks across die nation, has options to buy about 2,700 acres in Rutherford and Wilson counties and plans to buy all the property if it can build the motor-sports complex there. A 1.25-mile superspeedway, a road course, a short track, a dirt track and a drag strip are proposed for the motorsports complex, officials said.

Dover Downs, whose super-speedway in Dover, Del, holds two annual Winston Cup races, originally intended to build the racetrack straddling the county line near the northern Rutherford County community of Mona. Its inability to purchase nearly 300 acres from two Rutherford County property owners, though, forced the company to move the entire proposed racetrack into Wilson County. rtcMEr.iccrc THE LAST YEAR? no moTf tio.oo OCT. 5th NOV. 30th MON-FRI 10:006:00 2994 S.

Daily Newt journal Oct 24, 1998 Murfreesboro, Tcmu Looper (Continued from page 1) office, is being held without bond in the Cumberland County Jail.

An arraignment is set for Thursday. Looper was under a suicide watch, which Sheriff Butch Burgess said is standard procedure. Police disclosed little information about their investigation. They refused to comment on what led them to Looper, whether anyone else might have been involved and' whether Looper and Burks had any recent run-ins. There were reports that a man matching Looper's description was seen driving from the murder scene in a car similar to Looper's.

Police have not verified or denied the story. "We feel real comfortable that we've got the right person," Burgess said. Until he was arrested, Looper had not been seen publicly since the night before the killing. Police announced Thursday they wanted to interview him and asked the public's help in finding him, but declined to call him a suspect. "There are strategic reasons you may not want to call a suspect a suspect," District Attorney General Bill Gibson said.

"Suspects tend to flee harder than people who are sought for questioning." Looper's lawyer, well-known Nashville defense attorney Lionel Barrett, issued a statement Friday saying he probably will meet with Looper this weekend. He said he will not comment until next week, and that Looper and Looper's family will have no comment "in order to ensure a fair trial." Barrett told WHBQ-TV in Memphis the case is bizarre.
