Thursday, Feb. 6, 1969 Pottstown Rolling Along With HOWIE BEDELL Jack Smith Mercury Sports Major League Success Lures Pottstown Bedell For 14 years Howie Bedell has banged around the minor leagues. how it is for some men who have the impossible dream of major league success dangling in front of his eyes. At 33 years of age, however, dream is growing least as a player. Perhaps Philadelphia Phillies general manager John Quinn forecast future last year at a banquet when he said Bedell was the kind of man he would like to have in the organization a long, long time.

Bedell, who played for the Reading Phils last year, also served as coach. Recently the Northern and Central Junior High physical education teacher was named to public relations staff. It could be an indication of bigger things to come. One reliable source insists Bedell will be named in May to manage the Phillies farm club in the state of Washington. Bedell, of course, is being careful not to tip his hand.

Announcements like this are supposed to come from the Phillies. expect to open the season in April with Bedell said carefully. I have to admit that I no longer have aspirations as a major league player. But a man must do what he has to do to reach his ultimate goal. And at 33 that choice is always difficult.

I have the security of my family to think difficult to think of Bedell being in any place but Pottstown. He graduated from Pottstown High in 1955 where he was an All-State performer both football and basketball. He also played on the three of four Trojan baseball teams that won 48 straight to earn Hall of Fame recognition. Bedell, who has always been an outfielder, was signed out of West Chester State college after playing a Summer in Watertown, South Dakota in the Basin league (1956). when the league was considered one of the best in the said the slugger.

From there he played in Idaho, Texas and Kentucky. His best minor league season came in 1961 at Louisville when he hit .326. His 43-game hitting streak still stands as the longest in modern day hitting. Bedell got his first shot in the majors in 1962. The slogan that year was New in Bedell was the only thing new and his play earned him a Rookie of the Year nomination by the Sporting News.

But by the end of the year the promising outfielder was back in Louisville. He was shipped to Toronto in 1963 and then traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards moved him to Tulsa in and then released him. The Washington Senators picked him up and moved him to York.

Pa. for three years. As you can see, Bedell was gradually moving closer to home. For the past two years the aging outfielder played with Reading. And last year the Phillies called him up to the majors for two months.

The bounty, $25, was placed there by the father of Owen J. 154 pounder, Rick Mourar. Mourar collected the bounty with a 4-3 victory, but the Wildcats collected an even bigger prize, a 23-20 win over rival Pottstown. Ironically, the 154-pound bout also was the pivotal point in the match.

And even more important, the points that decided the bout were disputed. The unusual match went like this: The Schwoyer received a first period warning for stalling as Mourar hard for a taketown.
