The JOURNAL-STANDARD tAfUlBAT, MAY IPS ABC-TV Is Planning To Continue Listing McCarthy Hearings By C. E. BUTTERFIELD NEW YORK MV-ABC-TV says 1 has no Immediate intention of dis continuing dally telecasts of th McCarthy-Army hearing. The network may reconsider I the hearing runs on and on with no end in sight. Scheduled To Determine Tclecas If there are night sessions, tin decision to carry them will be de termined by the effect on schedule, which contains man: more sponsored programs than the daytime list.

ABC says an average of 70 stations are in Its hookup each day. Dumont also has continuec to relay the hearing, bringing the station total to around 80. ABC camera crews do the pickup. Continued Interest Program polls in nine cities out side of New York show viewing Interest has continued more or les; constant since the first day, say: ABC. There was even some evi dence of an increase.

Dumont reports similar results in New York and Washington. From my viewpoint, stead: watching becomes monotonous a times, since the procedure often bogs down into technicalities. Little Corn Planted Because Of Rainfall Low Temperatures The first week of May saw very little corn planted because of wet fields and low temperatures over most of the corn belt. Heavy rains in many areas over the May 1 weekend went a long way toward ending drought apprehension in most areas. The law of averages caught up with the areas most deficient in moisture as they received the most rain. Southern parts of Illinois and Indiana and central Missouri reported 1-3 inches of rain. Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio had rainfall up to inches.

The unusual feature of the week's weather was the cold temperatures following the rain. New low temperature records for early May were reported in many areas. Tuesday, May 4, Chicago reported 33 degrees, the lowest recorded temperature in the history of the weather bureau on that date. Experience has led to the belief that a soil temperature of 60 degrees is necessary for quick and vigorous germination. The report from the 20 DeKalb weather stations scattered through eight corn belt states showeu average daily soil temperatures of 43, 39, 42, 48, and 45 for the week of May 3-7.

Corn planted at such low soil temperatures will germinate slowly and is more subject to insect damage and seedling diseases.
