"You get a little taste and you want to get back up there." Cota played I A Cota concept since at 23 he's the youngest player on the Sounds opening day roster. "I was the youngest last year, too," he said. "But that's a good thing for me. I can learn from all these guys who've been in the game longer than me." New leadership at the top of the Pirate organization hasn't changed anything for Cota.

"Dave Littlefield, the new GM, came to me and said he had a good plan for me," Cota said. "I got plenty of playing time in spring training. I opened some played in Seattle during the All-Star break. A good spring this year made the decision to send him back to Nashville difficult for the Pirate staff. A year ago he went to the big league camp willing to work through the natural development process 1999 in Class 2000 at Altoona in AA, and last year at Nashville in AAA.

"I went to spring training this year to compete for a job," he said. "I opened some eyes. They've got good plans for me, so I can't get frustrated." Cota made the decision diffi- cult enough that for several weeks in March, rumors flew suggesting a trade, either involving Pirate backup catcher Keith Osik or Cota, himself. At one point, a Pittsburgh newspaper story had Osik admitting his tenure as Jason Kendall's backup could be near-ing its end. Pirate general manager Dave Littlefield was too busy dealing for pitchers to do anything about catchers.

(His last deal of spring training sent reliever Damaso Marte to the White Sox for Matt Guerrier, who will be in the Nashville rotation.) Cota heard the rumors, but says he can't worry about them. "I have the same attitude I had in spring training coming down to Nashville," he said. "You can worry about things. You can worry about when you're going to get called back again. "All I can do is come down here, do my job, play 100 percent and get better every day." During spring training Cota hit the ball, threw out runners and impressed with his defense.
