Air Force personnel serving overseas now are able to buy commemorative postage stamps at their military post offices, the result 'of a new policy in the Pentagon aimed at encoraging philately. Previously some army post offices stocked commemorative stamps but many others did not. The disparity was brought to the attention of the Army, Air Force and Post Office Department by the stamp editor of the Army Times Publishing with the result that this new policy has emerged. 1 South Pacifii Island. 5 Soft mixture 9 Beach.

The patient in question was treated by surgically creat ing a bypass or communication between the big vessels known as femoral artery and femoral vein, which respectively bring the blood to the leg and return it toward the heart.

When the patient's short leg had caught up with the other, the bypass was closed and circulation restored to normal. The procedure is potentially hazardous, but in this instance the child did very well. Her heart enlarged after the first operation because the altered circulation created new loads upon it, but after the second operation her heart action and blood pressure returned to normal. Those who want to remain smaller inquire how this can be accomplished. In general, boys want to be tall; girls tend to prefer being small.

For the most part we have to answer these inquirers by point ing out that you can't breed terriers from St. Bernard's, which is merely another way of saying that if you want to be tall you should have picked tall grand parents, and vice versa. In most instances it is neces sary to become reconciled to the natural growth pattern and make the best of it, assuring the best growth by good living habits, good medical care and plenty of rest. People destined to be tall must learn to use their stature gracefully and with a minimum of self-consciousness. Only when there is something abnormal about the glands which control growth, has it been possible to influence growth by hor mone treatment, and then only in childhood or very early youth, before the normal growing years have come to a close.

The glands concerned in growth and development are mainly the pituitary and the thy roid, though of courese normal growth demands a healthy coordination of all the glands of internal secretion. Thyroid and pituitary hormone therapy have had a limited success in sti mulating retarded growth. This long and somewhat dis couraging experience lends special interest to a recent case report of how an eight-year-old girl with a stunted leg was treated, and how this leg grew in a space of one and one half years until it was equal in length to the normal one. Bauer: What is Sim monds' disease and why is it called a disease? B. New Jersey. Answer: Simmonds' disease is premature aging due to failure of the Pituitary gland, situated just under the brain. It occurs mainly in women. The patient becomes emaciated, wrinkled and shows all the signs of aging before they are due.

It is called a disease because it is an abnormal condition; it is given the name Simmonds because a doctor by that name first re cognized this combination of symptoms and explained their cause.
