Several years later, for the Contemporary label, he recorded such West Coast modern jazz artists as Shelly Manne, Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Guiffre.

After stints as a writer and editor of music journals, Ertegun took up a new career lecturing in the history of American music at University of California at Los Angeles. He had the distinction of delivering the first courses on the history of jazz given for college credit in any American university, i In 1955, the jazz enthusiast moved to New York to help manage Ahmet's Atlantic Records, a record company started by the brothers with $10,000 in 1948. Under Nehu-shi's direction, the company became more involved in contemporary jazz. "He signed Ornette Coleman, Her-bie Mann, Coltrane," said Jerry Wexler, another Atlantic partner. "In many cases, these were their initial recordings." Ertegun is survived by his wife Selma, his daughter, Leyla, and his son, Rustem, and his brother Ahmet and his sister Selma Goksel.

Bomb blast kills nine in Kabul KABUL (AP) A bomb hidden in a truck exploded yesterday in the Afghan capial, shattering the quiet of a Muslim holiday and killing at least nine people, officials said. Forty-nine people were injured. The explosion prompted officials to increase security, which had been relaxed during the three-day Eid Al-Adha holiday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but the Soviet-backed government blamed Unsupported Muslim guerrillas and unnamed "foreip agents" who support them. The bomb, which experts say may have contained as much as 500 kilograms of dynamite, exploded at noon on Nader Shah Road near the city's centre, police and witnesses said.

Hospital sources said at least 10 of the injured were in critical condition. 1 "I saw (dead) people on the road. There were people with their heads totally smashed," said Mohammad, Nabi Andar, who arrived at the scene five minutes after the blast The explosion blew a crater two metres wide, two metres long and one metre deep in the road, officials said. Fragments from the bomb flew about 400 metres and windows in buildings about 300 metres away were smashed. "The explosion is the work of our opponents and foreip agents who support them," said Foreip Ministry official Mohammad Nabi Amani.

Amani did not identify the alleged foreip agents. But the government has long accused Pakistan of interfering in Afghanistan's internal affairs, an allegation the government in Islamabad denies. Pakistan, along with the United States, supports the Muslim guerrillas trying to overthrow the Afghan government The main perrilla groups are based in Pakistan. births AGRES Let and Martha art proud (q announce the birth of Iheir daughter Ashley Barbara Agrei, born July 10, weighing 7 lbs, ozs. Reuter 5th since March "ft "If Jf Preparing for mission Space shuttle Columbia rides atop transporter as it slowly makes way to launch pad at Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, Fla. Columbia is to lift off early next month with five-man crew. Argentine economy minister is i BUENOS AIRES (AP) Businessman Nestor Rapanelli was sworn in yesterday as Argentina's fifth economy minister in 3 months, and he said he will complete the austerity program of Miguel Roig, who died only six days after taking office. Rapanelli, 60, took his oath of office from President Carlos Menem in the same room where an all-night wake was held for Roig, whose died of a heart attack on Friday.

The new minister said he will "continue the policies of Roig" in an effort to halt hyperinflation, end Argentina's worst recession in 173 years and stop the widespread hun- ger that produced food riots in May. A voluntary price accord with businesses that would allow the government to co-ordinate wage increases "will be siped on Monday or Tuesday," Rapanelli told reporters. Roig, 68, had been negotiating the agreement at the time of his death. In choosing Rapanelli, Menem turned again to the giant Bunge and Born pain conglomerate, where the new minister served as vice president as had Roig until his retirement three years ago. Rapanelli "is the right man to maintain our economic propam," said Menem as he joined Roig's family, friends and other officios at the per-cent devaluation of the austral and raised state-controlled utility i prices by at least 200 per cent The currency held firm against the dollar, which Argentines use as a hedge against inflation, during the first three days ol the week.

But on Thursday, the dollar's value on the black market soared 700 australs, compared with the official rate of 650, following a series of rumors, including one that Roig might resign. Inflation pew by 1 14.5 per cent in June, and projections for July are 200 per cent or more. Unemployment is about 10 per cent. Real wages have shrunk by an estimated 60 per cent. The economic crisis led to food riots in late May that killed at least 14 people.

Thousands of Argentines now receive daily "meals at soup kitchens that were set up last month. Menem has estimated that nine million of the country's 30 million inhabitants are "living at the edge of misery." Yesterday, the government sent 140 tonnes of food to the northern provinces of Chaco and Tucuman for distribution among the needy. Rapanelli is the country's fifth economy minister since March 31, the day Juan Sourrouille resigned after failing to stabilize the econ omy. ABRAMOWITZ, nee Green Arlene Lois.
