r1T-V- ftl r-9in I VMwn ta mom 1. 1 i I I 5f Pt I III Bob Burgas uai away last night, appearing beort televhion camera! hlmsrlf. Hit column today written by John W. Cract of The Journal. The rcmirkible thing iboul Candida it how well the pliy hat aged.

Thu wat a drama writttr) in 1895 but it didn't how. Much of Shaw, unlor- tunately doesn't get old so gracefully. It if true, of course, that no one is shocked any more by an emancipated woman who has a moral sense based not on morality but on a natural shrewdness. Doctrinaire' socialism has lost its thrill and the conflict between idealism and laissez-faire has long since been fought to a stand-off. What ia neither old nor new but out of time ia the infinite subtlety of the relationship between man and wife.

And in paring the play for television Producer Mario Prizek wisely chose concentrate on the real heart of the drama. Un happily that selection made nearly everyone but the play's three central characters, ex pendable. Only Mist Prossy had any business being left. Burgess, the fatnerr and Mill, me naive curate, could hardly contribute anything to the central conflict. Miss Kate Reid made it look so easy.It wat Candida's play and Miss Reid wasn't jjiv ing tt away, Her art was in keeping Shaw under control.

That is the trick with the man's plays. Too often William Job, the poet, and Arthur Hill, playing Rev. James went down under the burden of the playwright'! virtuosity. Miss Reid slowed the pace down at times when it teemed all were about to link under the deluge of words. Shw and Miss Reid, and this production, were best tn the' moving speech in.

the final act where Candida talks of the cost of loving James Morell, speaks of the burden. of the glory. It it- really a full indeed of "beauty ful cadences" which Miss Reid spoke in eloquent sound and silence. It rewarded patience Arthur Hill Was properly fatuout and priggish. But It is an unenviable role for an actor.

Mr. Morell it In truth merely a straight man for Can dida, the echo chamber of con ventional pomposities. Marchbanks the poet was something of a wretched little disease. At timet he teemed more confused than complex, though the irony of the play is that he is as intelligent at Can dida. The role is realty a kind of practical joke by Shaw, a kind of parody of itself even Mr.

Job't talent couldn't quite make credible. This waa distinguished television and to be able to take it seriously as drama is as great a compliment to it at being enthusiastic about the production The Ford Start ime performance had momenta at good at anything being done anywhere In television today.
