11. Messenger showed us yesterday a banana grown by Mr. Huntington nf Orange. It wtis one of a bunch containing fifty-five bananas, and weighed four and onehalf ounces, An Imported banana which Mr, brought for comparison only weighed three and one-half ounces. The hull) from which the banana grew was imported from the Sandwich Islands and sold to Mr.

Huntington twenty-two mouths ago. II is of the Chinese dwarf Variety. In flavor as well as in size we consider the domestic fruit superior to the imported, This will settle forever the mooted question whether bananas will grow in Southern California. One reason of the superiority of the domestic fruit is perhaps found in the fact that it was allowed to ripen in the sun, while Hie other was picked green and shipped. Mr, Messenger is enthusiastic In his belief thut bananas will Hourish here, and lie bases his opinion upon a long and thorough experience in the culture of the fruit.

He thinks that when planted in groves the stalks will protect each other from any possibility of danger from frost or other damaging elements. We understand that it took twelve years to acclimate the banana In so that they would bear fruit, but here they have conic to maturity the first season after planting. Mr. Messenger lias two or threo hundred Florida bananas, planted the twenty-ninth of last April ami they arc now from six to eight feet high and look as though they are ready to bear. This is even a more rapid growth than the Chinese dwarf, Mr.

Messenger IsCOUfiduDt that lie can clear three four hundred dollars from an acre of the fruit the second or third year. Lumber In San Bernardino County. Mr, 0. (Jrgndall who is just in from tlie San Jacinto mountains, In San Bernardino us a visit yesterday. Mr.

Crandall has been engaged in erecting and carrying on a saw mill tor a company, of which Messrs, Qickuell and Hall are the managers, Tho mill Is about forty miles beyond Colton and eight miles from the Hue of track extended from that point. Mr. Crandall reports an ftbuntlauos of pitch and pine, which he thinks as line as can be found in the State, and there is a supply that will last the mill live years of steady running, About 400,000 feet of lumber has been already sawed. It can be hud down at the track for $18 a thousand, and is equal to tlie same qualities which sell in San Franoisoo at to a thousand, if this ithe case it 111 lime work a revolution in the lumber trade of our city. There is another mill In the same section which is employed in MWlng cedar tics.

Mr. Crandall says that the lumber region is overrun with' bud characters, ss is usual in snoii places. On the night of the listh of last month his tent was cut open and liis pants abstracted from under his head. He lost by the operation tine silver watch and llflu 111 rnooey, The watch be will he able lv identify If be should ever sef ngaiiL The number of the Base was 94,480, and tho works 38,699. Thpthief who has it will do well to he on his guard, or he will bring up with a short turn.
