M. for the PUTTING THE SCHOOL-BOOKS AWAY. ZOE ZELLA The term is finished aud o'er, Anil broken the small school band, And your heart Is sad and sore Thai you stand not hand In baud In the room where for two short years You've passed many a happy day; And into your eyes steal the tears While putting the school-books away. There's Yda, whose poet fancy Will lead her through realms ofdreams: May she miss all life's piquancy And find ouly the golden beams. And Jessie gracefully carried, As a valedictorian may, Tbe honors that round her tarried When the school-books were put away.

And Llllle, whose lace of beauty Wns always gemle and kind May she find that life's great duty And woman's her mind. Mary was the closet studen 1 The medal's bright golden ray Told how she had been true and urdent Ere the school-books were put away. boys in your class- Just two, with the selfsame name; In the future we hope they'll surpass Many others in honor and fame. He good, true and just to all men; Never from Eight's pathway stray, And work Just as hard then as when The school-books were not put away. Your class numbered even, I think, There's one, I shall rot tell you who, I know that In friendship the link Would be tnissed, dear, should I lose you.

"Study was her subjeot that night; Then may she remember each day The mln.ls that are noblest and bright Have never put the school-books away. I know you are sad to-day, dear: You find many things in that book; I think you are wishing while here, You knew how the other girls look, Or how they are feeling to-night And what, they've been doing to-day; Perhaps the tears, 100, dimmed their sight As they put.their school-books away. Dear Addle, to you and your class I can only make this adieu; As you through life's highway may pass I pray you be noble and true; Let nothing that's little or mean Ever enter your lives, night or day; Forget not, though He is unseen, God nevor puts the school-books away. Church Festival. The friends of the Southern Methodist Church will hold a festival in Turn-Verein Hall on Thursday evening, June 17th.

They propose to have the best music the city can furnish, pantomime, tableaux, shadow pictures, refreshments and many other interesting things. We hope the people will generally turn out and give our old Southern friends a good sendoff. They deserve help, and aH their cause is identified with the general good of the city we predict a grand success. We propose to take two "chances" in the festival in strawberries and one iv ice cream. A large audience attended Vivian's benefit last evening and were regaled with an enjoyable medley of opera, farce and song.

It was a success that must have been flattering to Mr. Vivian as well as a substantial financial tribute. From San Fernando. Editor, I have had my chance to be acquainted with everybody. Here is Hector, Parten, Yapp, Harris, Wallace, and a host of others, who are genial, social, clever and everything else that makes life pleasant. Mr. Editor, we shall send you a bear's paw. Adios, Maclay.

We don't see precisely how it was done; but there's Elipha Noyes, the man of big auction noise, at Los Angeles, has gone and married Mrs. Lovina Cubbage. We are in trouble about it; don't see how she made anything at all out of a negative No and a positive yes, but she seems to have f)Ut them together. It is a most curious caseof Love-ln-a No-yes anyway.
